What to do with down-filled coats??

I have been vegan for a few years now, not only with regards to plant-based eating, but I try my best to buy vegan clothes, shoes, make up etc.
However, before I ‘saw the light’, for want of a better phrase, I bought a down-filled winter coat. A very warm, expensive one, which is actually not the point I suppose.
This makes me feel very sad, and I don’t need any lectures about how bad it is. I understand.
But what should I do with it?? It feels very wrong to just ‘bin’ it, as I feel that belittles what went in to it. Of course I won’t sell it, and profit from it. And I don’t want to give it away either, as I don’t feel it should be worn.
What would you do?

I'd wear it. I have leather shoes from before I was vegan and every year I take them to be resoled at timpsons. Since I have them already I think the best thing is to get the absolute maximum use out of them. The harmful bit is the purchasing of non vegan items, once you've bought the thing no additional harm is caused by using it. But throwing something usable away and buying a new one does cause environmental harm, so the least harm in this situation is to use the item until it wears out.

Thank you all for your input.
So I did wear it last year, as I’m certainly no fashion influencer (that made me chuckle), so I have no worries about anyone rushing out to get one because I do. I wore it because yes, I already have it, and getting rid would cause more resources to be used to replace it, I get that. I have worn leather shoes until they wear out, and then replaced with vegan products.
What has prompted me to think ahead this year are the ‘gentle ribbing’ comments from my adult (non-vegan) sons last year along the lines of ‘you nice and warm there Mum, wrapped up in dead goose?’ :( Any attempt to explain my reasoning to still wear it has been met with howls of derision, because at the end of the day, it is a very comfortable warm coat.
So I’m thinking to either wear it, and suck up any sarcastic comments, or donate it.

Wear it until it wears out and then by something vegan.

Yes, wear it until it falls apart then replace with something more in keeping with your morals.

Children will find a new way to rib you. You might as well be warm while it happens.

If you explain your reasoning (the waste) would they not stop ribbing?

If they wouldn’t, donate it and get a vegan warm coat.

People like to try to pick out any hypocrisy that vegans might show. Something to do with you taking a stance.

Stand proud to your two sons. Better for thd planet and animal welfare for it to be used.

They'll just find something else to rib you about.

SionnachRua · 29/08/2021 15:50

Either wear it til it falls apart or donate it (I'd send it to a womens refuge personally). You destroying the jacket doesn't erase the fact that you paid money for a product that was made from animals, which presumably then encouraged the company to make more. It is what it is.

Ask someone who is handy with a sewing machine to turn it into a dog's bed Smile
