Jackfruit

What do I do with jackfruit?

Should I buy canned?

I've never seen fresh jackfruit in the uk but then I've never looked for it.

Can I add it to old El Paso fajhitas mix?

Any suggestions welcome!

Google Bosh jackfruit.
It comes up with loads of recipes. I saw someone else mention bosh on another thread yesterday so read a couple of their recipes last night, they look amazing.

I buy the tins and normally have bbq pulled jackfruit burgers. There are tons of recipes but this is my favourite www.abelandcole.co.uk/recipes/pulled-bbq-jackfruit

I’ve made this curry a couple of times too www.olivemagazine.com/recipes/vegan/vegan-jackfruit-massaman-curry/

Yes, you can buy it in canned form at Waitrose (part of their Cook's Ingredients range, in a yellow can) and in a variety of fresh and frozen ready meals in the larger Tesco and other shops.

It's tinned in Sainsbury's now too. I like it but I would say that it's not a great protein source, which is deceiving because it has such a meaty texture, so I bear that in mind when I'm putting meals together. I add it to slow-cooked chillis and stews often, and yes I think it would be great in fajitas.

I agree with the PP, it has a slightly meaty texture but has zero nutrition. I would rather have beans or tofu, or something like seitan that contains some protein.

I'm afraid to try it. I'm sure its going to be an abomination. Silly I know. What's it like?

Icanseegreenshoots · 20/01/2021 06:56

I have just bought some too, I plan to stir fry the jack fruit with some mushrooms and then use a bun or an open wrap with some iceberg lettuce! Pop some sweet potato wedges and a big winter salad. I am quite excited, I have been a vegetarian for 35 years and trying something new is quite unusual these days!

Has a nice texture, zero taste. So takes on the flavour of what it’s being cooked in. I do a nice curry which I found on Pinterest.

Icanseegreenshoots · 20/01/2021 06:57

I am trying the biona one.

I find jackfruit is the emperor's new clothes, and rather disappointing. I much prefer to use king oyster mushrooms which have a meatier texture and taste better.

BasinHaircut · 20/01/2021 13:37

I tried it the other day- tinned from Tesco. Added it to a tagine with chickpeas where I might have previously used lamb.

It doesn’t taste of anything and it wasn’t as meaty in texture as I’d been lead to believe. Certainly doesn’t have much going for it nutritionally. Won’t rush to buy again.

Ginfordinner · 21/01/2021 09:29

I wonder if the jackfruit lovers have never eaten meat?

I'm not even vegetarian, but love all kinds of foods, and often eat vegan or vegetarian out of choice. I feel it is disingenuous to claim that jackfruit has the same or even similar texture to pulled pork, because it doesn't - not in the slightest, and maybe that is why I find it disappointing.

IMO if you really want a chewy, meaty texture then seitan or king oyster mushrooms are the nearest you are going to get.

I tried it. I really didn't like it. It just felt weird in my mouth and I don't think I will cook it again.

I bought some recently and cooked it with various some Mexican spices to put in wraps. It was edible but pretty disappointing. I don’t see the point, particularly given it has no nutritional value.

Long term vegetarian & now vegan here. Tried jackfruit for the first time this week in a chilli recipe. I thought it was horrible texture, really disappointed. DH didn't like it either.

It didn't help that when I opened the tin the first bit that flopped out looked like a severed mouse ear. Made my stomach lurch Confused. Kind of ruined my expectations for the meal before I'd even started Grin
