Will you be getting the new Covid vaccination seeing how it’s been tested on animals?

There’s no right or wrong answer here but I am genuinely interested in how my fellow vegans feel about this.

I am personally not comfortable with the animal testing aspect of it so I am not sure if I will get it or not. My husband says I’m being daft cause all medicine is sadly tested on animals but I dunno, something just doesn’t sit right with me.

In almost every country in the world, ALL prescriptions drugs have to be tested on animals before being authorised for distribution.
Several countries, China above all, also impose animal testing for every single beauty product from shampoo to lipstick. So if a brand you use is also sold in China, you can be certain, it will have been tested. The labelling and claims are often misleading. Cruelty free doesn't have a geographical component, so it might be cruelty free in UK because the testing is done in France. Also it can be true that it is no "currently " doing testing, because they did it 2 years ago.

Even vegan food have used this loophole. The best example is Quorn, which when it was developed was first tested on animals for many years.

All vaccines have been tested on animals. Animals have accompanied medical advances in every step, from transplant to IVF,

If it reassures you in any way, COVID vaccine is the one with the least animal testing of all, since all steps have been rushed and melted together.

Even the gas you will maybe use for childbirth has been tested on animals, the anaesthesia for your c-section if needed and so on.

Either you refuse ALL medicine for you, your husband and future child or you make a compromise.

The history of humanity in all its development is closely linked and interlaced with the animals that have been used. Transport, combat, space program, companionship and agriculture before machinery .

We as vegan are aware of it, and we try to avoid many product when possible. But become an antivaxxer for that, not me.

@LeGrandBleu I think I’m in love with you

Agreed!

Twistered · 22/11/2020 22:04

My take on being vegan is not eating or using animal products, only using cruelty free products, but when it comes to medical needs take whatever is needed

Brilliant post @LeGrandBleu.

Insulin from cattle and pigs was used for many years to treat diabetes. It wasn't until 1978 that the first genetically engineered, synthetic “human” insulin was produced.

Suzi888 · 22/11/2020 22:42

No I won’t be using it.

LeGrandBleu · 23/11/2020 04:59

@Suzi888 you won't get the COVID vaccine because it is tested on animals or because you have concerns about the vaccine in general regardless of the animal issue?

cariadlet · 23/11/2020 05:56

I'm vegan and avoid animal products where possible eg food, toiletries and clothes. I reduce where I can't avoid eg am mostly cashless but occasionally use cash and unfortunately the new notes aren't vegan.

For me, medicine is a different category. If there was a choice of 2 remedies or vaccines for any illness, then I'd obviously choose the vegan version. If there's no choice, then I'll take the only option that's available to me.

The thing that I do to try and make a small difference is to watch where my money goes. When I buy from or donate to charity shops, I use ones that don't fund vivisection. I only donate to cruelty free charities including a regular donation to Animal Free Research UK (used to be the Dr Hadwen Trust).

StillMedusa · 25/11/2020 01:09

As LeGrandBleu said.
Relistically if you have ever had any medicine.. prescription or otherwise, animal testing will have taken place.
The alternative is ..possible death from preventable illness, 'freebirthing' etc etc.
Personally while I do my best to live a cruelty free life, I'm not prepared to risk my life ..because my family need me (or my childrens) I'll take the vaccine, and I would hope that my children (adult..one currently pregnant) will give their children vaccines and medicines as needed.
I have no need of animal tested (or any) makeup in my life but health.. yes.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 25/11/2020 01:33

The alternative is either untested medicine or early testing being done on people, who will inevitably be from vulnerable populations. Animal testing is the lesser evil.

Nat6999 · 25/11/2020 01:51

Any medicine in capsule form has animal products regardless of if it has been tested on animals, the capsule is made from gelatin.

Tulipshoots · 25/11/2020 04:39

There are some that are gelatin free actually.
Tulipshoots · 25/11/2020 04:45

Vegetarian Capsules

The main ingredient of vegetarian capsules is cellulose. It is of natural plant origin and has no known potential health hazards even when taken for prolonged periods, as it is non-toxic. Being not of animal origin, cellulose capsule types are suitable for individuals who have dietary or religious restrictions, which prevent them from consuming products from animal sources. Vegetarian capsules are also classified as Halal or Kosher products, which is important for many individuals. These capsules are also available in a variety of sizes and colour, and by offering both traditional and vegetarian capsules can manufacturer can cover all customer bases.

Yes. I guess my vegan view is that it should always be a force for good. Me getting a vaccine will not mean another animal will die. It may mean however another person who’s loved could end up in A+E or worse.

No, she's not.

She may be great, she maybe another brilliant poster, but she's not replacing them
in any way, they're both still outstanding posters, both very, very giving.

@blackkitty1234.

I will be getting the vaccine. It doesn't sit well with me, but if I get COVID I won't fare well & I'll be given a lot of different medication, which will likely have been tested on animals. There's no good choice.

TamingToddler · 30/11/2020 09:16

I had a lady who's vegan come in for her flu jab. It's got an egg component in it so when I asked her if she was allergic she said no but she is vegan. She said she was happy to have it either way as she has to make a compromise when it comes to medication. We do have an egg free version we gave her but that was our choice, she was happy with either.

Bells3032 · 30/11/2020 09:33

@LeGrandBleu beautifully put. I couldn't of said it better myself

WanderingFruitWonderer · 07/12/2020 09:09

Thank you for asking this OP, as to be honest I've lost sleep over this issue.
I'm passionately opposed to all animal testing. I've heard the Covid vaccine has been tested on primates, which horrifies me beyond measure.
So, I'd feel guilty, and like a terrible hypocrite if I take it. But I feel guilty also if I don't, as I want to be responsible, and don't want to be selfish or indulgent. I care about animals and people.
I don't know what to do?! Sad

Fortunately, I'll be right at the bottom of the list to have the vaccine, so I've got a while to give it thought (I'm young ish, and not clinically vulnerable to Covid).

Please don't give me a hard time anyone, for my ambivalence, as I'm in considerable mental and emotional agony over this.

Also, I have no judgement of anyone else's decisions re the vaccine (vegan or not) as it's such a personal choice, and people have different reasons for things.

I long for the day, when animal testing is abolished. I also support Dr Hadwen's Trust, in the hope of bringing this about...

blackkitty1234 · 12/12/2020 23:35

@WanderingFruitWonderer

I've heard the Covid vaccine has been tested on primates

It’s been tested on cats and dogs too in India and the University of Columbia and only God knows where else. I find this quite disturbing, and I am aware it’s an emotional reaction.

The vegan definition includes ‘as far as practical and possible’ so I suppose it depends on how necessary you think getting vaccinated is to your and other people’s health in comparison to the animal suffering.
