Vegan and Wheat/Gluten Free support thread

Is there anyone else who is vegan and intolerant to wheat or gluten and would like to share meal ideas and recipes?

I live with 3 meat eaters but my husband is lactose intolerant so always looking for meals that can be adapted for everyone. But also eat a few times a week separately due to work and happy to make totally separate meals.

I am long term (15 years) wheat intolerant due to IBS (but can eat oats/rice) and have a few other allergies (oranges and bizarrely edamame beans but not soya).

I'm happy with a mix of healthy and/or treats, and some 'meat' alternatives as well as lentils, beans, veggies, salads etc. We like to cook from scratch but also not averse to a quick and easy slightly more processed meal.

I'm also trying to lessen my high 'carb' alternatives due to menopausal weight gain but love finding a good gf bread or occasional cake that is also vegan.

Anyone else vegan and gluten/wheat free and would like to share ideas?

BuzzingtheBee · 06/07/2020 16:55

Should say dcs/dh eat meat ...

ppeatfruit · 07/07/2020 10:31

Hi I'm wheat intolerant too. (not coeliac though.) We eat spelt bread , which is easily digested. I know it has some gluten in it like rye, which I can eat but dh can't.

I'm on the 'what we eat' thread. If you eat rice pasta, you can follow most recipes on there. Hugh Fearnly W. Veg every day book is very helpful too.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 08/07/2020 13:45

I am intolerant to soy, wheat & dairy, & I'm vegetarian. I do occasionally eat eggs but TBH I try not to (I wouldn't if I could have tofu etc). I'm also intolerant to caffeine, MSG & most artificial sweeteners. I'm not coeliac (had a blood test a few weeks ago). I collect viable recipes on Pinterest. I am also in a house of meat-eaters with no other dietary restrictions. I batch prepare a lot of my food in advance, it's much easier.

Also for some reason I can't figure out, almond milk makes me really nauseous (often can't keep it down). I'm fine with almonds though... got some oat milk to try next, after my IBS calms down. I only recently realised I can't tolerate dairy, so I'm still trying to figure this aspect out.

And, I'd like to lose some weight, about 2.5 stone.

Breathmiller · 08/07/2020 19:59

Oh hello everyone
Thought this thread had died a death. 🙂

Yes, I'm not great with huge amounts of almond milk but I can take oatly.

My IBS has been bad lately. Probably because I'm eating badly due to lockdown.

Thanks for the recipe thread suggestion, I'll have a look

Sisyphus If you look at the ingredients on the almond milk carton , they mostly use a lot of sunflower oil and other stuff ,to pack it out (almonds are getting expensive) dh was drinking a lot of rice milk with sunflower oil in it and couldn't lose weight , as well as it affects his chest. Some people are intolerant to it.

Breathmiller · 10/07/2020 16:25

Oh nice. Thanks for all the suggestions.
I love th Kirstys apple oue but i haven't seen the carrot cake., I'll keep an eye out. .i also lovee Kirstys pizza...I add vegan soft cheese to the top as well as veggies. Feels like pizza.

I don't have a sainsbury's cloae but I do like when I go somewhere else to have a nosey at their offerings

I watched a great video from Clean Food Dirty Girl the other night. Basically about not snacking which is what i need to get back to. It's all plant based meals she does. We had the celery soup for lunch today and everyone enjoyed it. We are soup fiends though. I just batch cooked 3 different kinds of soup for the freezer.

Lentil, spinach and lemon from Jack monroe

Pea and mint with canalleni beans from Deliciously Ella i think

And the celery one from CFDG.

And a green and red lentil shepherds pie for the freezer.

As a treat I really like the Nomo bars with crunchy bits in. But I'm trying to lessen things like this to be healthier. But I have one for tonight as it's Friday. And Friday is treat night in this house.

Burgers and salad for dinner. I've given up on gf/vegan rolls and just have mine on a plate with sweet potato fries and loads of salad

I'm not vegan, I'd like to be but I think I'd waste away. Hopefully when my dc's are much older I can do it.

I did get some Moving Mountains vegan gluten free frankfurters from sainburys this week.
The white rabbit pizza company do delicious gluten free vegan pizzas. I've seen them in Waitrose and possibly Sainsburys.

Breathmiller · 10/07/2020 17:28

I think thats the best way to go meglethesecond just keep making swaps for things you're happy to swap for. You might find it just comes naturally that way.
I came from being lifelong veggie so it was easier but I did have a time when i wanted to cut out dairy and move to be vegan but i found it hard.
My daughters wise friend once said instead of thinking "I'm going to give up dairy altogether" then feeling like i was failing when I didn't to change your thought process to "im going to eat less dairy". It worked for me that way. I also had a good few years of veganuary and beyond but not finding it easy. Then one day it just worked.

Yes it seems almost too much to go GF AND vegan. Grin Also I follow my blood type for health, oh and have cut down almost completely on sugar!! That was for my teeth! But it gets easier as you do it and focus on the positives not the negatives. I major on fruit which really helps with my health etc. etc.

Breathmiller · 11/07/2020 14:44

Yes I'm trying to cut down sugar too. I used to have such a savoury tooth and heading to menopause i have acquired a sweet tooth. And it makes me feel rubbish.

It can be hard to eat vegan and gf but i have no choice with the gf as it makes me so ill. And I'm probably now at the stage of no choice about vegan. It just doesnt seem like something i would ever change.

I think that I get used to it as a way of eating and only realise its quite difficult when i ear with others who have no restrictions and perhaps have a more traditional way of eating. Its then i realise how different it is.

I gave up sugar (and I didn't used to have much, 'just a couple of squares of good quality dark chocolate after lunch' habit!) last autumn. The difference in my skin and eyes gave me the motivation to carry on.! Eating fruit on an empty stomach helped a lot as well, you don't crave normal sugar when you can have the real sweetness , combined with the vitamins and minerals of fresh seasonal organic fruit.

That's an interesting point about traditional ways of eating. they are IMO and E very damaging to the population's health. The Food Combining way of eating is a better way of eating traditionally, that's not eating carbs and high protein at the same meal and as I said eating fruit on it's own not as dessert.

I do think that a lot of the SM ready made meals ,both vegan and not, contain lots of ingredients that I wouldn't use in home cooking. So many weird ingredients!! best to keep them to a minimum.
