Plant milks

This article about plant milks popped up on my browser this evening.

While I am not vegan, we do eat a lot of vegetarian and vegan foods and often eat just plant based meals. I was delighted that oat milk is the best of the bunch

I'm vegan now (haven't always been) but with most things it's finding the right ones for you. There are some awful tasting dairy milk alternatives, but there are also some great ones- oatly barista for example. It's just a shame they're often so expensive as it tends to put them beyond most peoples budgets. I also love hazelnut milk, it tastes like the milk you have left after eating coco pops.

newlabelwriter · 09/06/2020 20:56

I've tried loads and Oatly Barista is by far the best (IMHO)

Ginfordinner · 09/06/2020 22:27

I wish they came in smaller sizes. DD is a student and gets Oatly because a) She likes it and b) None of the other students will steal it Grin

My daughter has Oatley barista, the Oatley chocolate fudge ice cream is delicious too!
I quite like hazelnut milk too.

Aria20 · 10/06/2020 07:22

I also wish they did smaller sizes as often some goes to waste as have to use within 5 days!

UnderTheBus · 10/06/2020 07:27

We like oat milk and hazelnut milk. The only issue is the cost - even on offer its twice the price of dairy milk and I think that puts a lot if people off.

teablanket · 10/06/2020 07:30

Another vote for oatly barista! I bloody love it. It's far too expensive for me to buy it often, though, so it's a bit of a treat when I do get it.

bluefoxmug · 10/06/2020 07:35

we switched to oat milk mostly.
we are not vegan or vegetarian but eat meat only once a week.
took a while to get used to, but now we like it. we found a supermarket own brand that contains more oats than oately and is delish.

Happynow001 · 10/06/2020 07:57

Would you mind sharing information (brand and price) on that please? I do try plant milks occasionally for various reasons but am out off by the price. Thanks!

bluefoxmug · 10/06/2020 08:15

I'm not in the uk. and that supermarket doesn't exist in uk I'm afraid.

but I can really recommend looking at other brands/own brands and see if there is something you like better.

LetMeIn321 · 10/06/2020 08:25

I LOVE oat milk. I love Oatly and Oatly Barista, however I have recently discovered Califia Farm oat milk which is just perfect for tea and coffee.

Happynow001 · 10/06/2020 08:41

@bluefoxmug
Aha! Thanks anyway.

Welshmaenad · 11/06/2020 18:28

I have bought some of the new Aldi own brand (Actileaf) oat milk to try today. At 89p if it's even just almost as good as Barista I will switch.

labazsisgoingmad · 11/06/2020 19:35

i used to have soya but its vile i love oat milk almond milk and rice milk is lovely

Aria20 · 12/06/2020 07:38

@Welshmaenad please report back with the Aldi oat milk review!! I heard Aldi do oat yoghurts too? I haven't managed to get to Aldi in ages to check!

Nquartz · 12/06/2020 08:30

I'm really sad about coconut, I use it off & on because coconuts are good for the environment. I've checked the Asda stuff & it isn't fair trade unfortunately.

I was put off oat milk because it has a lot of sugar (whereas coconut is naturally sweet) but I'm going to switch.

Welshmaenad · 12/06/2020 11:58

@Aria20 it's nice, in my coffee at least, not tried it on cereal but I had a little swig and I'm pleasantly surprised! It has no added sugar so not quite as sweet as barista but I think for cooking this will be a good thing - I'm going to stick with it!

I have only seen soya yoghurts in my Aldi - their own brand, theatre called Soyummy. They do vanilla, plain and blueberry. I get them regularly, they are really nice, I usually have them with fruit and granola for breakfast.

Ginfordinner · 12/06/2020 12:04

I had a look at the ingredient list this morning. Oatly Barista doesn't contain any sugar. In fact, none of the oat milks I have tried taste sweet.

I bought some Actileaf this morning in Morrisons, so I think it must be a brand in itself. It is 30p cheaper than Oatly.

@Welshmaenad I tried Oatley in my tea and it was tolerable so I could prob get used to it, but I find hazelnut or almond milk nicer.
I hate soya milk and soya yoghurts they make me heave, I'm not sure why?!

IsadoraQuagmire · 12/06/2020 12:57

Oatly Barista is the only item I was worried about shops running out of when the panic buying/lockdown happened!

NothingIsGoing2GetBetterItsNot · 14/06/2020 21:26

The only crap thing about oat milk is they all come in tetra parkway aren't recycled kerbside in many areas (& definitely not in mine) and as we love milk it's a big difference in our rubbish.... I keep meaning to try to make my own oat milk - apparently it's really easy - but never seem to get around to it 😕

Ginfordinner · 14/06/2020 21:36

Yes, the non recyclable aspect is annoying.

EnidsCrochetCorner · 14/06/2020 21:43

Gin we make our own oat milk.

You can determine how creamy you want it by either soaking the oats beforehand (I don't too lazy, because it requires a bit of a rinse) or at the squeezing stage just keep milking the bag and it gets creamier. It also works out cheaper than supermarket brands.

There are lots of different recipes online for it but you will need a blender, an oat milk bag for the straining and something to store it in. I use glass bottles from a canning place.

My recipe is not to hand but I think I use 120g oats - Asda basics variety at 7.5p per 100g , and 2 pints of water into a blender, blitz, strain, put into glass container.

silentpool · 14/06/2020 21:48

I make my own hazelnut milk for cereal etc. But I use the Oatly single cream in my coffee.

chocolateneededrn · 14/06/2020 21:56

Morrison's do an oat drink (milk) which is very nice in tea. It's about a pound for a litre, and I get the non refrigerated one.
