Veggie meat alternatives recommendations

chunkyrun · 23/05/2020 17:50

Trying to reduce meat consumption.

Tried Morrison's own quorn. Wasn't a fan. When making chilli I usually use minced beef and kidney beans or butter beans to bulk I up. Only using beans seems lacking.

Tried Linda Macartney cocktail sausages and they had the most peculiar after taste.

Can anyone recommend some good alternatives?

I use fry’s strips and napolina five beans

OneHanded · 23/05/2020 18:17

Or mixed beans with veggie sausages chopped up 😍

I use Quorn mince in chilli. It doesn't need as much cooking as regular mince. In fact, I've tried all difference mince substitutes, but we only really like Quorn.

I tried The Meatless Farm Co mince and thought it was pretty good! It was a pack from the fridge, not sure about their frozen version. Their sausages are also good - those and the Richmond ones are my favourite so far. Sainsburys also do some nice chorizo style shroomdogs which are great for pasta dishes.

I generally don’t bother with mince and just use lentils/veggies/beans for things like bolognese, chilli, cottage pie.

But for sausages Richmond meat free and Naked Glory are great. Naked Glory burgers are great too. I love Quorn sausages and their roast and all their nugget things but they’re veggie not vegan (have egg white in) Quorn have some vegan options now though

The sachets of precooked green lentils are a good mince substitute in chilli, spag bol etc. I also add a bit of TVP mince (dried soya mince) to make it a bit more meaty textured.

Yes I love the meatless farm food stuff. I love their burgers.
Fry's are great too. I love the southern style tenders and their hot dogs.
Sainsbury's stock both brands. Holland and Barrett have good ranges too.

Iceland have their own meat free range which is really good.

Another vote for the Richmond sausages - they are fab!

Fry's is good, as is Naked Glory. We also really like the Oomph range.

Quorn mince really is better than other veggie minces. In fact, the Quorn range does beat most supermarket own versions and generally I am not a brand snob at all.

I have found that mushrooms and aubergine (courgette is not bad either) are quite good at "replacing" meat in meals.

I am not vegetarian but I do try my best to reduce meat as well. I feed a family of 6 for 2 meals with 500/600g of mince meat. Or 2 chicken breasts for a meal. Just add more vegetables. The meat taste is there

Queenoftheashes · 24/05/2020 14:16

Asda meat free mince is good.
also haven’t tried it yet but this isn’t bacon smells just like bacon
Waitrose does good vegan cocktail sausages in the chilled section

Linda McCartney vegetarian pulled chicken is worth a try too. Really tasty.

dingdang · 24/05/2020 16:27

I've also ordered beyond burger in my latest online shop which people seem to rave about.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/05/2020 16:38

I've had the Beyond Meat sausages in Dishoom and they are amazing, so I definitely want to try the burgers at some point. £££ though.

The Richmond sausages are really good. I like the Sainsbo's Shroomdogs too, but Richmond even better imo.

I had some Iceland veggie burgers which were nice, although I thought they looked frighteningly meaty!

Frys hotdog sausages are good. I used to like the Sainsbo's ones, but not seen them for ages.

I use the Merchant Gourmet Puy lentils a lot, especially in lasagnes.

I use a mixture of red and green lentils in spag bol and chilli.

I like smoked tofu in stir fries and Thai/Chinese style curries - I dip it in oil/soy and spices and bake it until crispy.
