Ethics of eating vegan product from company that deals mainly in meat

I grabbed a vegan burger from KFC today and afterwards felt slightly uncomfortable that I'd bought something from a company that deals mainly in meat. I know you could say where does it end as most people shop in supermarkets which sell a lot more meat and animal products but it suddenly felt slightly worse because I was in a place that's pretty much ALL about meat. Thoughts?

I think that there are tonnes of vegans and vegetarians who end up giving up because of lack of availability of veggie options when they might be hungry, or pissed after a night out, so I think more companies branching out is definitely a good thing and stuff like this definitely has its place. I can see why some people would still want to boycott it, but I cant wait to try it. Mcdonalds veggie burgers are shit, and this definitely looks more interesting

I imagine you would like to see it being a success as that would mean a reduction in meat eating. Your purchase contributes to that success.

Was it tasty?

Look at it as a transition. We buy electric cars from companies that produce petrol cars. We buy gas and oil from companies that also sell electricity produced by wind and solar.
Buying a vegan product from a traditional meat seller helps the overall transition to sustainability. (I would think if I were a vegan).

It's actually not bad. The coating and mayo works really well with the Quorn burger. I'd say don't expect to bite into it expecting a taste like chicken though.

I think there's a time and a place.

For a vegan who is out with non vegan friends who all want to pile into KFC it's a great thing to have a vegan choice.

However, I wouldn't expect a vegan to want to seek out a vegan KFC if they had another, more ethical alternative.

This doesn't suggest that you give much thought to your food choices.

If you are excluding certain food groups, for whatever reason, maybe you need to put more planning and consideration into your diet.

or you are a journo

I see the dilemma but if more ate Vegan they would produce less chicken right?

I read somewhere recently that the vegan burger is outselling the hamburger at Leon. You never know, we might get to that stage at fast food restaurants like KFC. Keep buying it from them.

I understand what you’re saying. However, I want to encourage places to keep selling meat-free options (I’m veggie rather than vegan) so I have also bought a vegan KFC burger. DS was delighted as I usually refuse to go there (after I found out that even the fries aren’t veggie friendly). Not somewhere I want to eat every week, but a good development in meat- free choices.

furrytoebean · 25/01/2020 08:25

I think it's great that mainstream places are selling vegan options as it means that its far more accessible and often it's the social side that's the barrier to entry anyway.

Having said though I personally decided against eating the kfc burger as the whole place makes me think of chicken sadness. Also the smell makes me feel sick

Not sure what sigh is on about, it's totally fine to have a fake chicken burger as part of a balanced vegan diet Hmm

That was my thought. It almost felt like buying a vegan burger from a butcher's shop.

even the fries aren’t veggie friendly

KFC fries are probably the worst ones of the big fast food chains anyway.

I'm sure I read that they were doing huge business at one of the more expensive burger restaurants (Byron maybe?). It was whichever one uses the Beyond Burger on its menu.

I think any chains trying out veggie / vegan options should be encouraged, but I’m veggie and Leon is my go-to fast food place because it has so much choice.

The Love burger, the jackfruit wings, the vegan burger, the baked fries... They’re not just doing it as a token gimmick.
