How do you get enough iodine?

Disclaimer. I’m not really vegan but DH doesn’t eat meat but does eat fish and DD3 and DD baby have CMPA so DD3 and I don’t consume dairy products. How do I make sure we get enough iodine?

All the advice I’ve found online suggests that most iodine supplements are from seaweed and therefore they don’t know how much iodine is in it.

In fact looking I'm a big agog at how many supplements are out there these dats.!

I take the veg1 supplement that is sold by the vegan society, it contains vitamins b12 and d, iodine and selenium and something else that I can't remember!

I buy kelp tablets & crush up a couple & stir it into stews/curries etc

I think it's suitable for kids too, if you give a half tablet. Double check on the website though.

I cut out dairy and my hair started to fall out soon after, which I think may have been down to lack of iodine. I have been taking Perfectil hair, skin and nails tablets because they seem to be good all-round supplements that include iodine.

I did also read you can buy iodised salt, which is what they have as standard in the states instead of putting iodine in milk.

I also read kelp/seaweed tablets were unreliable and not a suitable alternative because the amount of iodine in seaweed varies so much.

Don't take kelp/seaweed. As you say, you don't know how much is in it, and you can end up messing up your thyroid function by overdosing.

I have iodine drops. I take 3 drops from time to time. I don't use much salt but do from time to time eat roasted sea weeds. More for pleasure than for iodine.

As we are in the topic of supplements, I really want to stress a forgotten supplements, which is DHA-EPA omega 3. I thought I was getting way more than the required dose of ALA by eating every day 2 heaped tablespoons of grounded flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts, which according to nutritional tables was giving me more than 800% of the required amount but my body converted ZERO plant based ALA omega 3 into the important EPA DHA, and when I tested my blood I was dangerously low, and I now supplement with plant based EPA and DHA directly . One should have more than >14 of Omega 3, my blood was 3.8 and at 3.5 you have cognitive decline and dementia.

Test you omega 3 and adjust with supplements if needed. Every body is different, some might be good ALA converter, others, like me, not at all.
