Hello all!
I went vegan a week ago. I've really enjoyed what I've been eating and have definitely eaten much better than I did before and less calories.
However, the bloating is horrendous and I've gained 7lbs. Can anyone tell me if this is normal?! Or send any kind of help!! I feel like I need to be wheeled out of my house....

To anyone deciding to to make the switch and adopting a vegan diet, I recommend to purchase a plant based nutrition book.

I have this one www.amazon.co.uk/Becoming-Vegan-Comprehensive-Reference-Plant-based/dp/1570672970/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_t_0?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforum-21&refRID=BWGFQSBTE5NBH2Q9P8XY and while I was looking for the link to put it here, a youtube video from her came up. I don't know if it is any good but here it comes

The bottom line however for those who don't really have the time is

  • Vit B12 Mandatory every day. 1 take 1mg (1000ug) , any excess goes with my pee and it is very cheap
  • iron It took me a while to get it right. Coffee/tea with or without caffeine inhibits iron absorption 2 hours before and after meal, so I try to have my iron rich meal in the evening and from time to time I take an iron supplement. I have regular blood test to check my vitamins and minerals. Too much iron is dangerous, so no DIY !
  • iodine if you don't eat a lot of seaweed, you need to consider iodine drops. I take 3 drop in a teaspoon of water once or twice a week
  • calcium I drink calcium enriched soy-milk and eat big amounts of dark greens, so I don't take any supplements, however here you need to do a bit of research because if a veggies has a high oxalate content, you won't be able to absorb its calcium, an example is spinach, high in calcium, but you can only absorb less than 25%
  • Vit D - I live in Australia and sit in the sun every day for at least 20 min until my skin becomes pinkish. For UK resident in the winter month, consider a supplement
  • Omega 3 and 6 I eat every morning grounded flaxseeds. I eat 3 table spoons for the anti breast cancer properties which is the absolute maximum allowed per day. Too much is harmful. For good nutrition 2 table spoons are enough. Chia seeds, walnuts, and brussel sprouts are another good source of Omega 3 . Omega 6 I get from nuts and olive oil

Malnutrition is rampant in vegans. Too much focus on what you take out - all animal products - and too little planning in what you put in.

Eat colourful even when eating carbs, so red or black rice, wholemeal spelt, and so on. Try to have a rainbow everyday in your plate with red cabbage, cauliflower, parsley, and so on

Do not fall into the fifty-shades-of-beige category
