Milk

Really want to go vegan. Have tried a few times previously over the years and reverted to being veggie. I struggle without dairy. Cheese I can overcome. Lots of chocolate alternative. But milk in tea and coffee has left me struggling. Either too greasy, curdles or too rich. What would you recommend for either?
Btw. Tried going black but v. hard going.

Unsweetened Almond or Oat work for me

sheepwitch · 18/06/2018 12:05

Oatly Barista is what you need.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 18/06/2018 12:07

almond milk

Invisimamma · 18/06/2018 12:08

Oatly

Beacauseisaidso · 18/06/2018 12:38

Thank you. Will try oatly barrister then. Can you get this in supermarkets?

Yes you can get it in supermarkets.

Also, hazelnut milk is lovely in coffee.

ClownStar · 18/06/2018 12:48

I find Oatly too oat-y, it makes my coffee taste like porridge. I like unsweetened Koko.

Beacauseisaidso · 18/06/2018 16:31

Thanks everyone. Stocked up today to see what works best.

Yy to Oatly barista.

sentenceinterrupted · 18/06/2018 16:40

Never tried barista but used koko a lot and the builders have often not noticed

kikisparks · 18/06/2018 20:14

Oat milk probably best, let us know how you get on Smile

choccybiscuit · 18/06/2018 20:24

My mum swears by koko, she's a massive tea drinker

LuMarie · 18/06/2018 20:29

Coconut milk is absolutely delicious. I get mine in Marks and Spencers.

LiteraryDevil1 · 19/06/2018 07:41

I now use rice milk in tea as closest to skimmed that I'm used to. Don't drink coffee so don't know what it's like in there. Rice and hemp milk are grim in porridge.

Beacauseisaidso · 19/06/2018 09:37

So far Koko is getting the thumbs up. Need to make tea a little weaker but so far so good!
Can't believe the explosion of vegan products to the market. So many more than say, 18 months ago (last time I had ago at switching).

They were around 18 months ago, but you had to search harder for them (allergies to egg and dairy (and others) in our house so we had a lot of alternatives). Used to have to shop from several shops to keep things in stock.... and we did a lot of online buying. Now the supermarkets have a much better range, generally.

sentenceinterrupted · 19/06/2018 10:28

But you're right in that there's now more brands of the same type of product, too...

Tackytriceratops · 30/06/2018 21:13

Please consider taking a supplement with iodine. The vegan society do one, but it's not quite enough if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. It's very important for thyroid health and early foetal development.

Iodine is in milk and white fish, less bioavailability in seaweed and you can accidentally overdose with seaweed, plus may have heavy metals.

For info, Marks and Spencer's make the only plant milks with good comparative amounts of iodine in (to cows milk). It may be in small amounts in oatley etc but not enough to fulfil needs.

If you are on thyroxine it's less necessary, but definitely so if pregnant.
