Would you buy a vegan recipe box?

I am thinking of selling vegan boxes. This will include recipes and ingredients. Is this something that you are likely to buy?

Fresh ingredients?

Korg · 28/04/2018 14:16

No. I cook from scratch.

cushioncovers · 28/04/2018 14:16

As a one off gift box I might but not on a regular basis.
How do you see people using them? Weekly meals? New to being vegan?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/04/2018 14:19

If it was something like this: plantcurious.co.uk I might, but it'd need to have really good quality fresh ingredients, and to be something really special / luxurious with hard to source ingredients to make it worth it. It'd definitely be a great rather than an everyday thing.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/04/2018 14:20

A treat, not a great

ppeatfruit · 28/04/2018 14:27

Nope I cook from scratch with my own recipes and ingredients, I like to choose my own. Good idea for those with no time and or have just started being vegan.

LoniceraJaponica · 28/04/2018 14:34

No. I like to cook from scratch and don't see how I can justify paying extra for something that someone else has put together for me. I prefer to select my own ingredients.

IMO for it to work you would have to provide difficult to find ingredients or smaller quantities of unusual ingredients. For example I can never get through a whole jar of sushi ginger or miso paste before they start to grow a beard.

Korg · 28/04/2018 16:40

It might appeal to people who are occasional vegans, or who are trying it out as a weight loss tactic.

TheIsland · 28/04/2018 16:45

Doesn’t hello fresh offer a vegan range?

sunnyjune · 28/04/2018 17:16

You'd have to make the recipes REALLY good and anything over £4 per portion would be a no from me

Praisebe · 28/04/2018 17:18

God no. Problem with Vegan convenience foods is they contain alot of unhealthy ingredients. Most vegans i know including me just eat fruit and vegetables anyway whats more convenient than that

PurpleDaisies · 28/04/2018 18:58

No, and this might be a sweeping generalisation but I think most vegans are likely to be competent cooks who are used to cooking from scratch.

thedevilinablackdress · 28/04/2018 20:35

You might get people who want to try out veganism but don't know where to start. Not for me though.

ppeatfruit · 29/04/2018 10:02

There are so many 'ready mades' and Take Aways that I can't eat . So apart from sushi etc. I always prepare my own food.

MyFriendFlickaWasAHorse · 29/04/2018 11:10

I also think people who aren’t vegan but want to eat vegan meals and don’t really know where to start might like this.

Also maybe vegans who are very low on time. Maybe university or college students? Though, they would be less likely to have money to spare for this.

There are definitely some “junk food vegans” out there who live off Oreos, Jusrol, chips and baked beans etc.

KingIrving · 29/04/2018 20:05

Can you give 5 examples of meals.

A recipe box just saves you the shopping, but if I am making a vegan Spanakopita it will still take me a huge amount of time. Even salads, such as roasted chickpeas with sweet potatoes and baby spinach take a certain amount of time.

What about refrigeration? How would you keep the tofu, tempeh or vegetables cool?

Claireyskillz · 29/04/2018 21:16

Yep. We get gousto sometimes but we've noticed that the vegan menus are far less exciting than the meaty ones we used to have. I'd consider a vegan alternative, but like another said I'd limit to £4 pp. It'd need to be stuff other than the basic chilli, stew, stir fry.

donnaeastman · 07/05/2018 03:45

This is good for those who are just starting being a vegan and for those who has a busy schedule. I would love to buy but not in a regular basis. I usually cook from scratch.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 07/05/2018 04:07

I think these boxes are a good idea but too expensive. I already have to get my fresh fruit & veg delivered but even with the mark-up and delivery fee it comes in much cheaper than these boxes usually do. I could get a nice ready-made meal delivered for that and save myself the cooking time.

I don’t think it’s a good business idea because you’re really only selling to people who are time-stretched, quite wealthy and who want to cook. The products would need to be luxurious and the recipes exciting yet quick. I think the vegan portion of this already small market would be tiny.

An alternative might be a vegan diet meal plan that covers all meals for a week? Then you could charge the extra because it would come with nutritional advice and save a lot of thinking and planning for the consumer.
