Just wondering if anyone shops regularly in either of these shops...I'm usually a Tesco person, but we have both of these near me..is it worth it? Does your money go further, and most importantly is there many vegan products...I'm spending well over a £100 a week on food ,but often the cupboards are bare...is it worth a look?

I was in Aldi yesterday. I'm not strictly vegan, but I only eat meat on maybe one or two occasions every week.
I was disappointed by the lack of veggie/vegan options. It got me to thinking that if I wanted to continue to eat the way I do or go even further towards a fully plant based diet, then I wouldn't be able to do much of my weekly shop in Aldi. It was a medium sized store if that makes any difference.

I am vegan and living in Australia and do a fair bit of my shopping at Aldi:

  • fresh fruit from berries to papaya, melons, pomegranate , ....
  • Fresh veggies both for raw and cooked, including kale
  • fresh herbs and herb plants
  • frozen berries
  • frozen spinach and peas
  • tofu
  • nuts (cashew, almonds, ...)
  • rolled oats
  • chickpeas, lentils, beans, ....
  • brown rice
  • olive oil, tomato paste, ....
  • soy milk
  • all my spices, turmeric, .....

You can totally be a plant based vegan at Aldi. I don't eat "fakes" such as fake cheese, fake burgers, fake yoghurt, .....

The only thing I can't find there is wholemeal flour and fresh yeast.
I go to big veggies shops for a greater variety in radicchio, tuscan cabbage, .artichoke.... but the choice in veggie is fine : several types of tomatoes, zucchini, aubergines, salads, wild rocket, carrots, several types of pumpkins, mushrooms, .....

So yes Aldi is vegan-friendly

The Aldi in Oz sounds better than UK Aldi!

I usually get the following-
Fresh fruit and veg (usually save lots on these)
Soya milk (again much savings)
Tinned toms/veg/pulses
Pasta
Quinoa (they do lovely tricoloured)
Dried fruit sometimes
White flour/yeast/cocoa powder etc
Sometimes fresh olives/hummus/falafel
Dark chocolate

I don't buy:

  • their nuts as I find they don't taste as fresh as the local health food shop's, and often they aren't actuallly cheaper. They're always a bit stale.
-they don't have proper whole grain rice but no supermarket does- that's a health food shop speciality.
  • they don't do tofu/tempeh/TVP, sausages etc soya yoghurt, ice cream.

Aldi do have lots of small snack pots that are great for my desk drawer.

I have a plant based diet so never really looked at ice-cream, yoghurt.
Our Aldi has a good choice in organic product so their nuts are really nice.

Yes totally forgot about the dried fruit. I like their dates.

Oh they have lovely coconut milk-free ice cream.

Lidl currently stocking a vegan range called Vemondo. Tofu, fake chicken nuggets, soya mince. I’ve only had the tofu which was fine. Unfortunately most of the range comes heavily packaged in green plastic which is not recyclable!! Very off putting!

Does Aldi do fresh soya milk? TMI but longlife soya milk makes my toddler constipated.
