DH's relations are visiting in a couple of weeks for a few nights - they're vegan, which we know very little about. Any tips on what foods to stock up on? We have suggested they bring some things themselves as we live rurally and our local supermarket barely stocks anything non mainstream.

I read somewhere about bread not being vegan - is that right (we have a fabulous local bakery we normally buy from)? It's been interesting looking at ingredients on store cupboard essentials you just assume are vegan but aren't. We have our own hens, would they be offended if we eat eggs for breakfast as normal?

So excuse my ignorance but any tips for dinner ideas etc would be appreciated! We want to have nice dinners planned and make them feel welcome.

Google says (definition of sausage)... meat is at the core of the definition.

2nd checking out Jack Monroe recipes- her pasta parmagiana is just wonderful.

Had the best vegan sandwich today: avocado, sundried tomato and harissa. Just lovely!

A vegan friend introduced me to these nut roasts: www.amazon.co.uk/Artisan-Grains-Country-Vegetable-Roast/dp/B00IS2V2DG?tag=mumsnetforum-21

I'm not vegan - but I immediately bought some for myself because they're delicious - I highly recommend. I tend to serve with sweet potato wedges and Mediterranean roasted vegetables.

Cheekyandfreaky · 20/02/2018 17:19

Also houmous and roasted veg is a great sandwich.

You could do a nice cous cous salad for lunch one day. Cous cous is lovely with harrissa spice paste and roasted peppers and courgette.

How ignorant

You say you wouldn’t eat a vegan sausage or vegan bacon or a vegan burger etc

What’s a sausage? I’m pretty sure a pig is not a sausage.

What’s bacon? Because a pig is not bacon

What’s a burger? I’m pretty sure a cow isn’t a burger

They are all items of food. You can make a sausage out of anything.

Besides we just prove that you can eat a sausage or a burger without having to kill an animal to do so

Also it’s quite confusing that you have a problem with ‘fake sausages’ yet you’ll happily put a ‘real sausage’ containing flesh, guts and arseholes in your mouth? Confused

lljkk · 20/02/2018 19:29

Yup, give me real meat. I don't have trouble with eating that. I'm a omnivore mammal.

But if I DID believe eating meat was wrong, I certainly would try to avoid fake meat. Not to the point of being rude if a kind person made it for me, though. Or arguing about it if there was a group pizza being ordered.

It'd be like... Enjoying a film about James Bond a rampant funny exciting sex pest even as I declared that I was a fervent supporter of Me Too.

PurpleDaisies · 20/02/2018 19:32

It’s in no way the same thing. No animals were harmed in the production of quorn burgers.

Why are you even on this thread?

pontiouspilates · 20/02/2018 19:35

Jack Monroe (Cooking on a Bootstrap) has some great vegan recipes all free and online.

PaperdollCartoon · 20/02/2018 19:42

@lljkk yes you’re an omnivore, that means you can eat meat, it doesn’t mean you have to. Eating meat was necessary in the past when food was scarce, it isn’t now for most people in the developed world when there’s an abundance of other foods on the supermarket shelves. You can choose not to hurt animals if you like and be just fine.

SuburbanRhonda · 20/02/2018 19:46

@lljkk

Since you said you would never be vegan, why on earth is it of any interest to you what shape people’s food comes in?

OutyMcOutface · 20/02/2018 19:47

Make sure that you have vegan milk substitute and just make lots of curries. Sone vegan will eat eggs from pet chickens if they don't think that the animals are being exploited (I wouldn't reccomend bring it up though unless they ask).

SuburbanRhonda · 20/02/2018 19:49

Thing is, there are lots of different milk substitutes. DD was home recently and she now drinks oat milk, whereas before it was almond milk. She hates soya milk.

Glitterandunicorns · 20/02/2018 19:51

There are some great suggestions on this thread. Can I also add falafel? It's really easy to make, and even easier to buy! It's delicious in sandwiches too, and very filling. I recommend the Cauldron brand.

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 20/02/2018 20:51

My fave breakfast is vegan. Toasted bread (naice breadWink) pierce it with a fork all over, drizzle with olive oil (it seeps into the bread) get a garlic clove and rub it all over the bread and then top the bread with fresh finely chopped tomatoes, sprinkle of salt! Yum!

Very Spanish Grin

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 20/02/2018 20:54

Oh and we just sit the ingredients out on the table, everyone stabs their own bread and rubs their own garlic!

chipsandcurrysaucemonster · 20/02/2018 21:18

@lljk

I don't think vegans eating meat substitutes is hypocritical (to your James Bond analogy) Vegans want to avoid animal cruelty and exploitation as much as is realistically possible. Eating savoury, dense, protein rich meat substitutes isn't hypocritical- saying meat tastes absolutely awful and then eating a Linda maccartney sausage would be hypocritical- I think meat is tasty but the flavour of meat can be replicated easily enough for me to eat a varied diet (from a bowl containing 8-9 different veg and grains to a 'kfc' style east London junk food binge) without having to participate in animals being killed for my appetite ;)

claraschu · 20/02/2018 21:27

Not all vegetarian wine is vegan, OP. I am just mentioning this because someone said that it was near the beginning of the thread. If your guests are quite particular, the vegan own-brand wines at Waitrose come with a blue label- just ask for advice from the wine person in the shop...
