Feel shit

Vegetarian 30 yrs ,vegan 3 yrs...very poor diet...I'm a poor excuse of a vegan..I feel physically and mentally shit..before I head to the doctors for anti depressants, could it be my shit diet ? And if so what do vegans need vitamin wise? Or supplement wise...what do you take?

I bought that 15 minute vegan book by Katie Beskow after it was recommended here. As a depressed person I've found it to be a godsend. The stuff in there isn't expensive either. I've been eating more real food and less fruit (which is expensive).

There are lots of fat vegans. There is a blog called fat gay vegan... and Ms Cupcake ain't exactly thin! You aren't failing at veganism if you are overweight!

dangermouseisace · 14/02/2018 11:53

BTW the VEG 1 supplement is chewed so should be absorbed quickly like the spray and it has 1000% the amount of B12 you need...might stop you requiring different products. It also has iodine which can be deficient in vegan diet and can cause depression.

When I went to the dr I just described what was going on and said that I was worried I could be anaemic or something as my diet was crap and I was really tired, and she did a blood test for iron and b12 from that.

Chugalug · 14/02/2018 15:43

I don't know any fat vegans....and all the ones in the media seem thin to me..I don't really tell people I'm vegan ,for that reason, you get the raised eyebrows and a Really...look...I've been in holland and Barrett.got got advice and am £30 down...but I have liquid iron, liquid vitamin, liquid vit d and liquid b12.. I'm fine to take it all as the vitamin spray missed out the other vitamins....I'm not good with tablets so I needed liquids anyway....so fingers crossed..

OP posts:
Chugalug · 14/02/2018 15:46

The vit d has sheeps wool in it...which I wasn't sure about ,and feel bad ,but I just know I wouldn't take tablets ,so it was that or nothing...my little boy ,said ..mummy it's not vegan you can't have that..then proceed to tell me I'm not vegan any more...bloody kids..

The first vegan I ever knew was obese. I was getting chunky (I was physically fit but in love with bread) until The Depression Diet sorted that one out.

The vegan society say that being vegan is to 'exclude as far as possible and practical' all forms of animal exploitation. Their recommendation with regards medication is to ask for animal free ones if they are available, and not to stop taking stuff just because it has an animal product in it. So you are still vegan.

I've been provided with medication that I'm pretty sure has gelatin in it until I get my regular type back (which has lactose in it). I still say I'm vegan though, as I cannot manage without the medication.

OutyMcOutface · 14/02/2018 17:57

Vegans need the same as any other person. I suggest you go see a nutritionist.

Chugalug · 14/02/2018 18:15

Thanks dangermouse, that was nice of you....I've not taken it yet...putting the vit d off🙁..why does it have to come from sheeps wool ....there must be other ways ...mushrooms were in the tablets, but I struggle to swallow them and apparently there's not enough to make a difference in them...trying to avoid the gp ,so hoping these sprays will work.

You can get vegan D3 drops www.amazon.co.uk/Viridian-Liquid-Vitamin-2000IU-Vegan/dp/B00JR7G19Q/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?keywords=vitamin+d+viridian&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1518631222&sr=8-3

Once you’ve run out of your other ones since you’ve already spent the money.

As to your question you should probably see a dietician, but you can get most of your nutrients if you eat lots of pulses, green leafy veg, berries, other veg, some nuts and seeds and grains. Is batch cooking at the weekend an option? You’ll be best going to the GP too because if it is depression you’ll need treatment.

kikisparks · 14/02/2018 18:19

Also good luck and well done for what you’re doing for the animals and your impressive commitment to stick with it, hopefully you’ll be able to get healthy and feel better soon.

Chugalug · 14/02/2018 18:21

I've been on all the Prozac type tablets in the past, none of them made a difference, last time I got put on some heavy duty shit ,that made me disoriented within half hour of taking it,and I felt stoned all day.plus it meant I couldn't drive..if I go back to the gp ,it's going to be these again...so I really need to sort this myself

No medications are vegan if you look at it from a purist persepective - some might contain animal products but they've ALL been tested on animals.

That doesn't mean vegans should not be taking medication obviously but no reason to get upset about something coming from sheeps wool if you're considering anti-depressants as an alternative.

Chugalug · 14/02/2018 18:39

It dosnt make sense thou, because an animal won't have the same reaction to a drug as a human.plus it can't talk to tell you how it feels on the drug.so utterly pointless

OP posts:
HarveyKietelRabbit · 14/02/2018 18:49

It's not utterly pointless. They're not testing on animals to see any therapeutic effect -
that comes later in human studies.

They're just using animals for the living tissue i'm afraid. How much of a drug is absorbed into the blood? how is the drug broken down chemically in a body? How toxic is the drug and it's metabolites to a body? How quickly is the drug and its metabolites excreted from a body?

It's those animal studies that decide whether a drug will proceed to human studies. All drug trials start with animals because you can't test a drug on humans that might kill them immediately or cause huge damage. Lots of drugs don't proceed to human trials because that's what happens when they test on animals.

Don’t take b vitamin supliments as they will skewer the results incorrectly. Ask gp for B12 tear

Labradoodliedoodoo · 14/02/2018 20:00

B12 blood test

GeorgeTheHippo · 14/02/2018 20:10

Why not take the supplements? If she finds out she is low in a vitamin then she will be told to improve her diet and take a supplement. Why not do that immediately and see if she feels better, rather than go to the GP to have tests to find out why she feels crap?

OP your diet is awful, of course you feel tired and miserable. You need to do something fast.

Labradoodliedoodoo · 15/02/2018 08:09

No b12 supplements can skewer results and hide a dangerous deficiency. If B12 is low you will be given an instense series of B12 injections possibly followed by one regular b12 injections every three months. I’d only ever consider b12 supplements after blood tests.

RaininSummer · 15/02/2018 08:17

Yes your diet is terrible and will make you feel horrible. What do the rest of your family eat in the evening when you have your toast and crisps etc?

ZeroFuchsGiven · 15/02/2018 08:26

No.nomeat.onlythe dog eats meat..3 are vegan ,3 are vegi

I've 6 people to feed, soon be 7. And I cook what I know they will eat, then can't be bothered to cook for me,so have toast / sandwich/ crisps for dinner

Why are you not eating the meal you have prepared for the other 3 vegans in the house? I would be speaking to the gp and being honest, this doesn't read like a vegan diet problem but more of an eating disorder to me.

dangermouseisace · 15/02/2018 09:53

labridoodledoo are you vegan? It's just that vegans are generally advised to supplement their diet with B12 so it seems a bit odd to be advising any vegan, especially one with a poor diet, to not supplement.

Chugalug · 15/02/2018 10:56

Thanks for the replies..having a very bad day today...think I'm just putting off the enevitable gp visit..I get awful side effects with anti depressants.but feeling like this isn't nice either ..
