Veganuary 2018

lurchermummy · 30/12/2017 23:50

Myself and DD aged 16 are going to try a vegan diet for January. DD is already vegetarian and I was vegetarian for many years although recently not. I really want to try a lighter healthier plant based way of eating, feel blurgh after all the rich food of Christmas, and am really keen to see if it helps my psoriasis. If we like it we may well continue but I signed up for Veganuary to give us a focus. DD2 is a fussy eater and not a big fan of vegetables so that may be tricky, DH is happy to eat vegetarian but vegan may be a step too far for him. Would really welcome any tips for adaptable family meals eg. sausage and mash, I can do vegan sausages for us and meat for them. I'm actually really looking forward to it now!

Count me out.

I dislike these fads like veganism.
I eat very little meat or dairy anyway.

It is almost impossible to avoid using products that contain by products from animal carcasses anyway, especially if you use TVs, lap tops, cars electronic devices.

Deadlylampshade · 02/01/2018 16:25

speak

Ok you’re considered counted out Hmm

trevortrevorslattery · 02/01/2018 16:45

Hello - I am trying vegan this month too so I would like to be counted in Grin.

I think I will make a cottage pie thing - any recommendations for what kind of lentils substitute well for mince? thanks in advance!

AdalindSchade · 02/01/2018 17:01

speakout you don't have to post something on every single thread you know

Woolfrai · 02/01/2018 18:46

Double curry here today. Thai oconut curry for lunch, and a curry for tea too. I've had some 'nakd' toffee bites today too.

WhyDidIEatThat · 02/01/2018 19:41

Even the veg and grains we eat generally involve killing some animals so I’m not sure what your point is speakout Hmm

Today’s menu: black coffee, nicotine lozenges and a plain soft tortilla but I’ll make a stir fry in a minute with some red and yellow peppers, onions, rice and have it with spinach rocket and watercress 😇

Magpie24 · 02/01/2018 19:48

Did a vegan haul at Waitrose this evening: olives, smoked tofu, roasted peanuts, beetroot and carrot salad, limes, avocados, wholemeal pitta and hummus. Hunger pangs be gone!

Magpie24 · 02/01/2018 19:49

@trevortrevorslattery simple red lentils will work well in a cottage pie. I like sweet potato mash on top too!

trevortrevorslattery · 02/01/2018 19:51

Fab thanks @magpie

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2018 19:55

Smoked tofu sounds fab magpie. Where in Waitrose is it? I spent a long time wandering around Tesco and failing to find any tofu.

Tonight’s cauliflower, parsnip and chickpea curry was nice. Lots left over for lunch tomorrow too which is always a bonus.

Magpie24 · 02/01/2018 20:12

@PurpleDaisies it is in the fresh (not frozen) deli section with things like quorn sausages and falafel. Only ever seen it in Waitrose though. And if you're keen on tofu try and find an Asian supermarket as I find the stuff from Tesco quite boring.

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2018 20:18

I’ve got a Waitrose nearby so I’ll make a special visit, and check out if there are any Asian supermarkets locally. Thanks. Smile

Today's menu

Oats with almond milk and banana with Apple

Lentil soup (onion, garlic, red lentils, stock, cumin, coriander) with pitta bread

Celery, leek and mushroom risotto (just stock) with nutritional yeast flakes ( nutty cheesy flavour so yum).

Snacking on almonds.

Magpie24 · 02/01/2018 20:55

@travailtotravel interesting to hear about the nutritional yeast, what else do you use it on? Am tempted to get some in

Dottie39 · 02/01/2018 21:03

Today I had coffee with oat milk, crackers with vegetable pate, mushroom pie with veg and mash.
Coming to terms with Bailey's not being vegan... apparently marks and Spencer do a vegan version??

Woolfrai · 02/01/2018 21:11

I tried the violife cream 'cheese'. It's going to take a little getting used to.

I think I'll also miss my usually honey. Really enjoying small bits or dark chocolate and I found some good pinto bean snacks.

Mysterious I ordered one of the pies to try! So I shall be having that tomorrow.

Magpie24 · 02/01/2018 21:14

@Woolfrai golden syrup is a good honey substitute. Pretty sweet though!

kikisparks · 02/01/2018 21:17

Dottie m&s vegan chocolate coconut liqueur is a lot like baileys but I think it was seasonal for Christmas. There’s also almond milk Baileys in whole foods and besos de oro is similar.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 02/01/2018 21:19

Nowhere near as good as you lot but we’ve pledged to go meat and fish-free for one week per month this year with a view to increasing that so I’ve picked up some lovely sounding heals from this thread!! Thank you.

Woolfrai · 02/01/2018 21:24

Thank you @Magpie24 - golden syrup hadn't even crossed my mind.

milkysmum · 02/01/2018 21:25

I have just discovered this web site - BOSH. Some really amazing looking food on it!
www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.bosh.tv/&ved=0ahUKEwiv-d20m7rYAhXLDsAKHae4ApYQFggdMAA&usg=AOvVaw1C1dGPntUFmvKhkn0mLcuC

Magpie24 · 02/01/2018 21:26

@AvonCallingBarksdale sounds great!!

@Woolfrai you're welcome. Although I'm not sure how nice a golden syrup and lemon tea would be...!

travailtotravel · 02/01/2018 21:31

@magpie24 first time using. I will say don't put them next to the fish food if you're a goldfish fancier ... would be easily confused! You seem to just sprinkle on savoury and they dissolve with all their vitamin goodness.

PerditaNitt · 02/01/2018 21:37

To the earlier poster, Ben and Jerry’s vegan ice cream is on offer at Tesco at the moment for 2.50. Highly, highly recommend. I’m doing veganuary, but my husband and FIL (who I have failed to convince to join me) have been scoffing my dairy free ice cream and not realising there was any difference in flavour Smile.

I’m of Indian heritage and am finding that a lot of my normal indian vegetarian meals are already vegan or easily adapted.

Flatpackjackie · 02/01/2018 21:38

I've been vegan for twenty years now, and I promise it gets easier all the time!

Ocado is excellent, just search for 'vegan': www.ocado.com/webshop/getSearchProducts.do?clearTabs=yes&isFreshSearch=true&chosenSuggestionPosition=0&entry=vegan
