Vegan and nut free - is it doable?

Hi all, I've thought about veganism for a long time and have decided to give it a try in January. I'm a student, so try and cook cheaply and a lot of the meals I have regularly are already vegan- dhal, bean chilli, curry, etc.

The only thing that is worrying me is that I'm allergic to nuts, namely cashews (anaphylactic). I can get away with a handful of roasted peanuts, but for some reason natural peanut butters cause a reaction (can scoff a bag of Reece's Pieces though!) So all nut milks, butters, and a lot of the shop bought snacks like Naked bars are out, which is annoying as they're obviously a great source of protein, and are in a lot of meal plans/recipes. Just wondered if anyone had any experience with this problem (or can tell me if I'm mad for thinking of trying!) Thanks in advance!

Thank you for all the replies!

I am ok with coconut, regularly use coconut products with no issue. I am also ok with soy, will give the Wow butter a try!

Unfortunately it is all nuts (inc peanuts) I need to avoid. I can eat avocado but only about half at a time, which probably isn't a bad thing.

@RavingRoo and @marcopront - thank you for sharing your experiences of Indian food - I am actually half Indian Grin millet roti sounds interesting, could be a good alternative to flour for more protein. We rarely eat Indian takeaway at home due to the abundance of nuts - I've found it's v easy to make my mum's recipes vegan just by switching out the ghee and meat.

Eating out is worrying me slightly, but luckily uni is in a big city so there is plenty of choice and a few vegan restaurants. I might struggle to kick my supermarket meal deal habit, but there seem to be some good options from having a look online. As far as other food groups go, I love fruit, veg, pulses, and beans, so should be able to get enough protein with a bit of forethought.

Thanks again!
