Protein

So I know the whole protein deficiency thing is a myth and we get lots of protein from broccoli legumes, lentils etc and I do eat lots of these. But I quite like having a 'main' protein component to my meals otherwise I end up eating loads of carbs to fill myself. I find myself eating a lot of tofu, tempeh and quorn products but it feels a bit samey. I can't eat wheat so seitan is out.

Does anyone have any good ideas for protein-rich meal components? Thanks

Nuts? Cashews, peanuts, flaked roasted almonds are my faves. Go nicely in stir frys and curries. But butter is also good.

Oh and beans. Good protein source.

ponderingprobably · 02/09/2017 12:03

Nut butter!

I use beans and nut butters but struggle with making them a 'main iyswim? They're good in salads, curries and stir fries but not really a 'main' component of a meal in the way that a veggie burger or tofu steak is. Maybe I'm searching for the unavailable Sad

Could you make some sort of loaf/pattie with them? Beans / chickpeas especially. I've not researched recipes but I expect you could.

Here's a recipe I found from a quick google. There were plenty more.

You could vary the flavour with different herbs and spices.

Thanks pondering a loaf is a great idea - and fairly obvious now you've pointed it out Blush

I could easily make a nut loaf or some bean burgers and freeze them - if anyone has any good recipes, please post!

Oh and you could always make some sort of parcel or pie. It wouldn't have to be too pastry heavy - you could use Vegan Filo.

Homemade seitan? There's so many ways to do it. Bean and lentil loaves. I go for Fry's products and tofu a lot.

ponderingprobably · 02/09/2017 21:13

Oh sorry, just saw you can't eat wheat, scrap the pastry. Could you use a rice wrap though?

NeonFlower · 02/09/2017 21:31

Falafal, houmous, chickpea curries. Bean and nut burgers.

Veterinari · 03/09/2017 15:42

It's ok I can use GF pastry - thanks

If anyone has any good burger or loaf recipes pls share!

I roast onions, peppers, sweet potatoes, parsnips and carrots in olive oil with some harisa paste or some cumin and coriander and chopped nuts. Can use anything you have in the fridge. Mash all together. Wrap in filo. Bake in the oven.

How about getting some protein powder and using it to make patties or tortillas etc

a thing I quit like the s this pasta from H&B - I think it'd made of soya and mung beans and it's 50% protein. Great with a vegetable sauce.

"I know the whole protein deficiency thing is a myth"

Is it?

Have you looked into how many different kinds of essential dietary proteins there are?
