London- is there anywhere reasonably cheap to stay within 40 minutes or so?

We're going for 2 night in the summer with some friends so need two family rooms. London prices are so expensive that we are thinking of trying to stay somewhere outside of London that we could travel from both days, preferably within 40 minutes by train/bus. Someobdy suggested Woking but I have no idea where this is [off to look at a map...]

I don't know that area at all but we are coming from the west so if anybody can recommend somewhere to stay it would be much appreciated

Travelodge or Premier Travel Inn, They are quite a few within walking distance of tube lines and if you book well enough in advance you can find a deal for £19 for a night. I know there are a few around Wembley area or around the Excel centre. There is one in Brentford and a couple on the A40.

There are Travelodges very central.

You don't want to mess about with last trains and that sort of thing if you are coming for a fun time - check out prices at Travelodge, Days Inn and other budget chains.

Train fares could cost more than the saving tbh, and buses are slooooow. I second the Travelodge suggestion.

Might also be worth looking at B&Bs? though tends to be harder to find family rooms. You can also get s/c apartments in some places which might work out not too pricey once shared out.

we have tons of hotels here (borehamwood) some for £29 per night, 20 mins into london kings cross

NeatFreak · 17/06/2010 19:11

Thanks. I did have a look at Travelodges but couldn't work out where they were as I really don't know London at all! I also tried some hostels but couldn't get any availability. Will explore some more

You could also try university accommodation, many of them rent out decent, central room during the holidays e.g. LSE or Imperial College.

orienteerer · 17/06/2010 19:15

And here.

orienteerer · 17/06/2010 19:16

......and UCL

do you need full hotel or nice B&B? try Wolsey Lodges if the latter. They don't have many in London but you could stay in a place where you can access lots of London and still get a cab back for example at around £50 a night - much better than big London hotel prices, though don't know how they compare to a central London Travelodge or similar.

I live about 30mins from Waterloo but a daily travelcard is £15.50 per day.

Have commuted from both Woking and Guildford, both of which are 20-40mins from Waterloo and fare is nearer the £20 per day mark if you don't want to be restricted by rush hour travel etc.

Would definitely suggest looking at budget chains that are on a tube line, keep away from having to use overground trains would be my advice.

try travel lodge, or premier lodge. Or try guest houses, which can work out about the amount you are talking - we used to go to various around Victoria/Pimlico area - had family rooms.

Romanarama · 17/06/2010 19:28

Lastminute.com has cheap deals 'secret' hotels - you don't know which hotel it is until you've , but do know where, and how many stars. I have often used it for a good deal.

Thanks, been looking at Travelodges and Premier Inns but am a bit befuddled by the big city talk
We mainly want to go to the Science Museum and Natural History museum, have somewhere family friendly to eat and possibly somewhere for the children to run around a bit. We will be arriving about 5pm on Friday and leaving lunch time Sunday...

The following Premier travel inn's are close to a tube station and not far from central london.

  • Hammersmith (west central)
-Putney Bridge (southwest of the river)
  • Kensington (central west)
  • Euston (central northish)
  • Greenford (a little further west but more affordable) (tube and train into London)

The following Travelodges are close to a tube station as well.

  • Park Royal (west)
  • Marylebone (Central)
  • Euston (central)
  • Covent Garden (right in the hub)
  • Waterloo (south of the river but central)
  • Southwark (south of the river but central)
  • Tower Bridge (East central)
  • Liverpool St (East central)

Hope this helps.

orienteerer · 17/06/2010 20:24
