Any ideas of places to visit in Fife area

We are holidaying in Fife in the summer and I need to get a list of things together to visit. We are staying in Lower Largo and we have two kids - 8 and 3.

Any great days out up there or places to avoid. Cheers!

I thought I had replied to this.

I dont know Lower Largo all that well but it is really central. If you go west it takes you to Leven. Now Leven aint pretty but it does have supermarket, a good play park and a swimming pool. Just before Leven is Blacketyside Farm where you can pick your own fruit. They also have a good farm shop and coffee shop. This year they have opened up a playpark with trapolines, zip wire and tractors etc. Across from this is Silverburn park. Further west is Kircaldy which again is dire but does have museums and art galleries along with some big parks. Ravenscraig park and Castle are meant to be good. Just along from that is Kinghorn which has a lovely beach and then Burntisland where you will find another indoor pool and a large funfair if that is your kind of thing.

But I would go East. Here you will find Elie which has a great beach where you can windsail. Cricket is played on the beach and you can walk over the rocks from Ruby Bay to a little lighthouse and an old bathing tower. Great spot for a picnic.

Leaving Elie there is another great farm shop which I would recommend you visit if you are selfcatering.
St Monans and Pittenweem are pretty little villages. Pittenweem has playpark and outdoor paddling pool and a chocolate shop.

Lots to do in Anstruther including the Fisheries museum, Life boat and the famous Chippy along with proper harbour and Marina. Go for sail to the Isle of May and see seals and puffins. There is a cheese farm on the back road between Pitenweem and Anstruther where you can visit the cows and see the cheese being made. Fantastic coffee shop there. Kellie castle is close to there but I have never been. Also in that area in the Secret Bunker(google) which my kids love.

Head north inland and Cupar has a lot going on. The Deer Centre is near here along and the Cairnie fruit farm which has a maze and all sorts. St Andrews has Sealife Centre, Golf Museum Botanic gardens, putting, ice cream shops etc. The Byre Theatre usually runs a very child friendly programme during the summer. Beach here is great for kite flying. Visit Fisher and Donaldson bakery for a fudgie!

If the weather is really bad then Perth and Dundee are under an hour away.

Throughout the summer each area/village will have gala days. The Anstruther Munster is great as is Pittenweem Festival. Check out the Visit Scotland website for the dates you need.

Thanks for that - will have a look at them. Coffee shops always feature on our list!

Just need the weather!

A second vote for the Scottish Deer Centre. Great day out. Vouchers for free kids on martin's money pages normally.

We went to Fife at half term. Great time - though was not prepared for the weather - so would recommend packing for all seasons...

Also, not sure where you could get the train from but we had a day in Edinburgh and went over the rail bridge - really lovely. Nice lunch at Pizza Express and then wandered up to castle. Played in park but theres tonnes to do and if the festival is on there'll be street theatre.

Have fun

The Deer Centre is great, Falkland is pretty too.

geordieminx · 21/06/2010 21:03

Do not go to the secret bunker. It is in the middle of nowhere, takes forever to get to and is shit

As you were.

Champagneforlunch · 21/06/2010 21:17

Cairnie fruit farm near Cupar is good and sells very nice cakes in he coffee shop.

weegiemum · 21/06/2010 21:21

Heeeee! My Gran lived there when I was little (in LL).

The beach is fine (probably not as clean as when I was small).

ANy of the wee villages along there have good beaches, great chippies, nice icecream shops etc.

Easy to get to Edinburgh if you have a car, but the nearest train station is a bit far away (think its Markinch).

Swimming pool in Leven, the Perth one is really good. St Andrews is nice as well and not too far.

Have a lovely time.

Another vote for the deer park at Cupar, and Cairnie fruit farm is very very good.

Was in Elie today - it's fab. Eat at the Ship Inn by the beach.

Pillars of Hercules farm by Falkland - go for a walk, then have lovely coffee, cakes, soups etc.

Allanhill fruit farm in St Andrews great for a laid back coffee/lunch - eat strawberries while children run off and play.

androbbob · 21/06/2010 21:35

Lovely! My list is getting longer!

We are well prepared for the weather - goes with the territory of holidaying in the UK!!

Second (or 6th or 7th) for Cairnie fruit farm

If you get bored of Cairnie (I was there this afternoon!) you can also try Muddy Boots by Kingskettle (also home to the Singing Kettle), it's another outdoor play place with a great cafe and shop.

ln1981 · 30/06/2010 22:48

You could also try Fife Animal Park. Reasonably priced (we are family of 5 and it only cost us £20). Its small but has quite a bit in it, animals (of course!), a large park up the back and a cafe.

Not been to Muddy Boots but ds1 was there a couple of a weeks ago for a friends birthday and he absolutely loved it.

Definately best staying up in the East Neuk-far prettier than down here in West Fife
