Am now caught up in horrible tide of pessimism (probably nothing to do with holidays, am nearing my 12 wk scan and dreading it because I have Previous with 12 wk scans, and we're also, incidentally, trying to get house on market before we actually go to Dorset. Arghhh!) and convinced it will pee it down for entire fortnight. The cottage we've booked is lush (old, lovely interiors but childsafe, pretty garden, comfortable) so it's not going to be horrible if we have some rainy days indoors with DS's trainset, but obviously we could do that at home!

DS is 2.3 and looking forward to 'seaside stuff'. I have no probs with sitting on the beach in light drizzle (half of me is English, after all!) but it's going to be dispiriting if we do that all the time. What sorts of things are there to do in West Dorset (staying near Beaminster) when it pours? We already know about Monkey World.

Alternatively, slap me about the head and tell me not to be so stupid, it'll be nice and sunny!

don't go to monkey world if its raining - we did this once and they were all hiding in their beds so you couldn't see them. you could go to poole or bournemouth - cinema, inside swimming pools etc. you can get the little car ferry from studland over to poole to minimise drive. think there's an aquarium in weymouth - def one at the front in bournemouth. its a lovely area

Lyme regis-beach and fossil hunting/proper rock pools, pretty shops (but expensive!)

Abbotsbury-Swannary and there's a small farm (petting type)

Bridport-Nice little shops, resturants, bakeries etc. Market is on Saturday (and one day in the week, but I can't remember which)

I recommend Loders Arms in Loders for food if you are going to Bridport.

Dorchester-normal shopping 'town'.Hardy's cottage is nearby if you like history, very pretty in summer!.

Thanks! I love rock pools and fossil hunting, though DS probably not up to spotting fossils yet (he'd like rock pools). Though last year I found that by June, fossils were stripped bare. You need to go in winter after a storm...

Maybe we should just get a pop-up tent for the beach and sit in there as it rains?
