Is the Isle of Wight chavvy?

Thinking of going here in June, but is it chavvy? We usually end up in Cornwall or Devon but fancied somewhere different. Looking to stay at West Bay Club. Thanks

define 'chavvy' please

TartanKnickers · 03/06/2010 10:19

How can an island be chavvy?

FFS

I'm not quite sure how an entire island of 150 square miles with about 125,000 residents could be "chavvy".

Kewcumber · 03/06/2010 10:51

Its like most places - lots of different areas all catering to different tastes. Its not a big island but big enough that you question doesn;t make sense.

chibi · 03/06/2010 10:55

the island is extremely chavvy and can frequently be seen gadding about in the Channel with a can of cheap lager in its hand throwing evils at all and sundry while belligerently shouting 'oi you looking at my bird'.

you can imagine what the island is like with its children - fruit shoots, sausage rolls etc. i won't even describe how it dresses, suffice it to say it is ghastly.

avoid.

have you considered the isles of scilly? they are very tasteful and come from a good family - father was a vicar i think

hth!

Blimey! How to offend a million people at once...sorry not intended. Perhaps I should phrase differently? From what I've read, it appears that a lot of the resorts are in need of a bit of tlc and rather rundown. Don't stone me just cos I like nice things ladies!

We had our best ever family holiday on the IOW last year. Fab beaches and countryside and loads to do.

We were camping with 3 DCs aged 2-12 years old.

Lilymaid · 03/06/2010 12:04

I thought the usual criticism of the IoW is that it is still back in the 1950s - way before the chavs.
Possibly a few "teddy boys"?

blackflyinyourchardonnay · 03/06/2010 13:03

'The resorts' are also where people live- my dad and family included.
It's not just a place for people who 'like nice things' to go you know!

TigerFeet- that would be the IOW being a chav again

usualsuspect · 03/06/2010 13:18

I had my first holiday romance on the IOW

AMumInScotland · 03/06/2010 13:23

There are a number of towns, lots of villages, lots of countryside and coastline. Some parts could probably do with a make-over, but other parts have had plenty of change in recent years.

Parts can be quite touristy, other parts far less so - if you are used to places like Devon and Cornwall then I think you'd find a similar mix of things which suit you and things which don't.

I don't think "chavvy" would be one of the first words which would spring to mind - though there are a number of lowish-cost holiday parks which would presumably appeal to lower-income families if that's what you mean. But I would have thought more "chavs" would be on all-you-can-drink breaks in Spain?

Celery · 03/06/2010 18:12

It's like every other rural place in the UK. Yes there are chavs here, but there's every other type of person here too. It's not just an empty island where people go on holiday. 125,000 people live and work here.

Avoid Sandown, Ryde and all the caravan resorts if you want to avoid chavs.

I realise I sound like I'm offended. I'm not. It's just a ridiculous question, along the lines of "do you need a passport to go to the Isle of Wight?" which I have been asked seriously a couple of times.

notnowbernard · 03/06/2010 18:14

Cannot be arsed to read thread because I have never seen such a ridiculous thread title on MN EVER

Kewcumber · 03/06/2010 21:20

Celery - my very rich sister would take issue with avoiding the chavs in Ryde as her very expensive third house is just outside there

Though she does barricade herself into the house and makes any delivery men leave the goods at the bottom of the drive in case she is chavvified...

Meglet · 03/06/2010 21:27

Cowes week isn't chavvy is it?

ChippyMinton · 03/06/2010 22:11

Ah now, I also like 'nice things' and frequently holiday on a caravan park on the island. having tried similar mainland parks, I would say that the trip across the Solent acts as an effective filter.

harpsichordcarrier · 03/06/2010 22:16

yeah. it's full of disgusting poor people and you know how they mess up posh peoples' nice things.
Poor people only like disgusting, horrible things, of course.

deaddei · 03/06/2010 22:18

Oh this is why I love MN- this has had me crying with laughter.

southeastastra · 03/06/2010 22:26

went to the beach at ryde last august in the evening, it was so beautiful! really white sands that went on for miles. and morris dancers which is always nice

iow is a fantastic place
