Scafell pike is most normally climbed from Wasdale campsite.

Brrrr. October!

Tis the back end of nowhere but this is bus info from the campsite. I suppose you would get a train to Oxenholme and then local trains/bus. Might be cheaper to hire a car if you drive!

"There is a taxibus service which runs on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. You must pre-book (Call Gosforth Taxis on 019467 25308). You could reach Wasdale by train and then a mountain hike. Take the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway to Irton or Dalegarth from Ravenglass (rail and bus connections), and then 4 miles on foot along mountain paths to Wasdale. For timetable information , visit Traveline or telephone the traveline on 0871 200 2233.

campsite details

You can climb it from Great Langdale (also a campsite) but is a long walk for that late in the year - have done it!

i think theres a pub called the Wasdale Inn which does accomodation if you didnt fancy camping - when i went there they had a microbrewery and cracking beer which i needed after getting up and down Scafell in one piece.

ONly drank in the pub though didnt stop overnight

The walk up Scafell Pike from Borrowdale is magnificent.

If you can't find a B&B in Seathwaite or Seatoller, maybe you could stay in the Derwentwater YHA hostel (has family rooms) and then get a cab or a small bus. You can get to Keswick on National Express, or by rail ro Penrith and then local Stagecoach buses.

There is a campsite / B&B at Seatoller here which has buses from Keswick.

Borrowdale is beautiful.

You can also walk it from Borrowdale or, for a longer day, Langdale, both of which are a bit more accessible than Wasdale.

By the way, if you're doing it in October you will really struggle to get anywhere in the Lakes on public transport as everything will be on the winter timetable and buses very infrequent.

You can get the train to Windermere and then bus over to Keswick relatively easily but after that you might struggle.

It's probably better to hire a car once you're there.
