We're thinking of cottage accommodation, a bit of seaside would be good.

Where should we go?

Where should we avoid?

Not been to Gressenhall, but Blickling and Felbrigg are good for kids as they have loads of children's trails. My dc's love them (we live about 5 mins from Blickling Hall).

As someone who lives here though, I would agree there's not much to do in the rain, but if this summer is anything like last summer you won't see much of it in Norfolk.

If you're looking at seaside towns though you can't beat Wells, Sheringham is also lovely, and there are loads of really pretty villages to choose from.

Anybody got any good ideas for this weekend (in Norfolk/Norwich) as it is supposed to be torrential rain. I think there is something on at the Sainsburys Centre, but has anyone got any other ideas?

Gressenhall is a fantastic day out, but a good deal of it, is outdoors.

Blu · 31/03/2010 17:13

LOL, Fimbow, I'm not sure that any of my recommendations would be a full day out of the rain
And I agree the Halls are a bit dreary, and the cafe attached to the Bygones Exhibition at Holkham is possibly the worst cafe I have ever been to - disgusting school dinner food (and a lot more expensive).
Other 10 minute indoor attractions are the Shell Museum at Glandford, and the Museum in Cromer which has hairy mammoth bones and reconstructions of fishermans cottages, and there is reputed to be a Museum of Gas at Fakenham, but I have always preferred getting soaked on a walk to that
People traipse down to Wroxham Barns - not for me.

Blu · 31/03/2010 17:14

There are magic mushrooms in the woods at Felbrigg...

LadyBiscuit · 31/03/2010 17:15

Go to Walsingham on the little train - if you get there early you can get a carriage with a roof and Walsingham is very odd - it's like the Lourdes of Norfolk

Fimbow · 31/03/2010 17:18

LOL Blue . I could never ever go to Wroxham Barns if it was raining and the fair wasn't on, my ds would be distraught. (He sounds a charmer doesn't he!) Actually my parents like going there when they come down from Scotland but they were not amused when the amusement bit changed and you couldn't use old pennies in the machines, my dad has loads for some reason and used to love it (think he was reliving his yoof).

Actually I fancied a walk round all the different Roys departments last weekend in Hoveton, someone at work says they have the best garden bit, but dh wouldn't hear of it, hates the place! I remember when we first moved here and got a map of the place, I was most disappointed that it was all divided up with a road running through it, it was not the way the map depicted it at all.

Fimbow · 31/03/2010 17:19

Blu, Blu, Blu not Blue - my apologies

Blu · 31/03/2010 17:27

The Mucklebugh Collection! That's a reasonable day out for anyone interested in tanks and army stuff. It smells funny though. And it's hardly the Imperial War Museum.

Blu · 31/03/2010 17:32

A ferry trip to see the seals from Morston is fab on a nice day - you get really close to the seals on the sandbanks and they pop up all round the boat.

I love N Norfolk. (my Mum lives there, and my brother closer to the Happisburgh coast)

Actually, OP, if you want to base yourselves closer to the broads, the coast at Happisburgh and Waxham sands is lovely - sandy beaches - and you would be close to the broads, Bewilderwood, etc.

ShowOfHands · 31/03/2010 20:03

Fimbow, I used to work at the Sainsbury Centre, well the SRU that is attached to it. Brilliant place.

King's Lynn, though a lot like falling off the end of the world and into blancmange is quite good in wet weather. The museum's interesting, love the Green Quay and the historic bit is good for a wander. Avoid the rest of it though.

I do agree about Walsingham. I remember going as a child and freaking out. It's got an odd atmosphere. My Dad's church is there, has 2 shrines (including a mock up of Jesus's tomb that you can crawl into if you're that was inclined) and when the pilgrims descend, it's just bizarre.

Norwich castle well worth a visit and Norwich itself is fairly lovely if you go to the right places. Lots of shopping to be had if you like shopping. Which I don't. But you might.

ShowOfHands · 31/03/2010 20:05

Or have a drive round places and play 'guess the pronounciation'. Try Happisburgh, Wymondham and Hunstanton for starters... Good luck!

Fimbow · 31/03/2010 20:52

How do you say Hunstanton then SOH, I thought it was Hun stan ton . I have only lived here for 9 years!

When we first moved here we thought it was Cos=tessy too!

My friend (another Scot) has real trouble trying to say Wymondham. She knows what it should be, but is really really struggling with it. She has only been here since August though, we will soon have her talking the local dialect though. Toosdee for example

LadyBiscuit · 31/03/2010 21:06

And what about Cley? Fimbow - I'm with you - had no idea that Hunstanton was pronounced any different from how it's spelt although I do know how to say Wymondham and Happisburgh

Fimbow · 31/03/2010 21:10

Lady B - have just googled it is said Hunstun, well you learn something new everyday.

LadyBiscuit · 31/03/2010 21:26

Well I never! There you go, you can sound like a local now

ShowOfHands · 31/03/2010 21:31

Yes, Hunstun. I live in Pozzick. Except they don't spell it that way.

Yes, Cley, Costessey, Naaridge, Humbase, Loostarft. Need a guidebook really.

Dear oh dear.

Fimbow · 31/03/2010 22:37

Is that Postwick? For some reason I thought you lived near Eaton Park, SOH. Maybe I have mixed you up with someone else.

ShowOfHands · 31/03/2010 23:05

Yes Postwick. There's another MNer lives near Eaton Park.

Blu · 01/04/2010 11:29

Don't forget Stiffkey!
And has anyone seen the road signs in Wiveton that say 'Slow you Down'?

My Mum was shown the Holy Hosepipe in Walsingham. They get through a lot of Holy Water, especially in pilgramage season, so have blessed a hosepipe on an outside tap round the back of the church so that there is planty to go round.
