Weymouth/Swanage/Kimmeridge help needed

We are staying in Weymouth for a week in May, and I would like to drive to Swanage, take 2yr old dd on the steam traim, visit Kimmeridge and dh would also like to visit the beer festival at Harman's Cross Station.

Is this possible in one day?

Should we try to park in Swanange or get on the Norden park and ride. If we do the park and ride would we still be able to visit Kimmeridge the same day?

Advice very gratefully recieved

Tyneham is beautiful.

DD is 2.7 and already obsessed with looking for fossils amongst any stones!

Very jealous, I love that area and haven't been for years. Sounds fab. Most activities with a 2 year old don't last more than a couple of hours.

I would love to walk around Tyneham, not sure dh would be so keen. Wonder if I could leave him somewhere (with dd ) and go for a walk there by myself.

Its very close to Corfe Castle...... Leave them there for a little while??

here is the railway website. There's a page about the beer festival, but the ticket info is a bit confusing - might be worth ringing them.

A rover ticket is the the one that's valid all day.

ThreeGuesses · 14/03/2010 22:15

Thanks Chippy, I read it as on beer festival day a rover would cost £21 per adult.
But I will ring to confirm

Could I walk from Corfe to Tyneham? Howlong would it take roughly? I will about 4 months pregnant by then but would still love a pretty walk!

It's about six miles each way, and Tyneham is located within the army firing ranges which are only open to the public at weekends.

this walk looks good, starting in Tyneham.

If you want to do fossil hunting on a different beach you can always go along the opposite direction from Weymouth towards Lyme Regis, quite a few places along there have good beaches & fossils. Mind you I prefer the Purbeck Area, spent many happy family holidays there as a child & have taken my children back several times. We usually stay in & around Worth Matravers & walk down to Seacombe & Winspit, plus also Chapman's Pool (although that is a very steep hill to negotiate). All of the Dorset Coast from Studland onwards has part of the South West Coast Long Distance Footpath & the Kimmeridge Area is a World Heritage Site for its Sea Life. A few years back we went to Kimmeridge & they did taster snorkelling in that you put on masks & sometimes snorkels, laid on you fronts on rock ledges & put your heads under the water to see the sea life. Had to be booked in advance but great fun.
