Well, the Llyn Peninsula is gorgeous. Harlech, Porthmadog, Barmouth, Abersoch area. Lots to do, castles, walks, beaches. I would say you are about 3 hours or so from Barmouth coming from Manchester.

Avoid Rhyl like the plague. Although they are doing it up slowly it is still a dump, although nearer to you.

If you are staying for a weekend then Llandudno is also good. Beaches, walks, small fairground although lots of oldies. Quite sedate really.

Hope you have a good time wherever you end up

If they are into Doctor Who or Torchwood, then you could take them into Cardiff and Cardiff Baby and then they could have a go at location spoting, have a tour around the bay by boat or speedboat (lots of fun!)
Visit the Dr Who exibition, other than that there are the places that others have told you about.
But please, avoid Barry Island, it is a total dump and always was, even in the 1980s. I thought they would have revamped it, but it's worse than ever
Another good place to visit (free) is Big pit in the valleys and the Museum of Welsh life on the Western outskirts of Cardiff.
Just remeber ALL museums in Wales are free!

Duh, I meant Cardiff Bay! But this might be a long trek from Manchester.

we enjoyed the gower as good beaches and near swansea and also brecon - hired a canal boat for the day and you can go down a coal mine. agree that cardiff also worth a visit

We often end up going to Wales for short breaks - it's so cheap compared with England and the scenery is gorgeous when it stops raining

Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons are beautiful, as is Gower and Pembrokeshire coast. It's quite difficult to go wrong in Wales I think.

Caaardiff four hours from Manchester on average. Less if you have clear roads and a fast car.

West Wales is gorgeous but probably too far. But it's got loads to do.
