Lake District - mobile home on farm - good idea?

Thinking of going to Lake District in July and staying on one of those mobile homes at a farm. We will have 2 DCs, 4yo and 1yo.

Want to keep things cheap, and thought kids would enjoy being on a farm, which is why the mobile home idea.

What does anyone think? Is the Lake District a good idea? Will it rain all the time? Should we consider somewhere else, or a different type of accomodation?

(We could afford to pay more if necessary, but would prefer not to as we would like to go to stay at few different places this year.)

This is the sort of thing we've been considering: www.countrycaravans.co.uk/manorfarm/manorfarm.html

That looks nice. What sort of price is it? We like the lakes, you just have to be ready for rain!

Thanks for replying Beth. I think around £300 for a week.

Any suggestions for what to do if it does rain?

Broughton in Furness is actually on the edge of the Lake District, so you'll have a bit of a drive to get to any of the popular destinations - it's not a large area but the roads are narrow, with lots of traffic in the summer, so be prepared that a short distance can take a while to travel!

It doesn't rain all the time (honest ) but the weather tends to be changeable so you need to be prepared for rain whatever you're planning.

There are indoor things to do in various places - NT houses, museums etc. There is a Beatrix Potter centre in Bowness which would probably do you for an afternoon.

This site lists a few alternatives

That's a good point Ponders. I had thought that maybe it would be less busy around there, but maybe not! Are there good views/ interesting things near that area also? I don't think we'd mind if we missed out on some of the more popular lakes/attractions as long as there was plenty to do and see where we were. Thought it might be good to be nearer the seaside as well.

Wow, that's a great list, thanks.

There's loads to do in the southern part of Cumbria so you can easily avoid driving into the busy Windermere area too often.

Muncaster Castle & the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway are both quite close to Broughton & there are some nice beachy places up the coast.

Barrow in Furness has a great theatre/public centre called Forum 28 - they often have family activities on during the school holidays.

Grange-over-Sands is a good day out - there's a lovely park & an excellent playground - & near there are Holker Hall & Ducky's Park Farm

There's another railway - the Lakeside & Haverthwaite - which runs from just S of Lake Windermere up to Lakeside where the Aquarium is. You could leave your car at Haverthwaite & get about on the train & the Windermere cruises for a day. The railway do combined tickets, details & helpful links here (click on Local Attractions for destinations)

I bet you'll have a great week & £300 is a bargain!

Wow thanks for all that info Ponders! I'm sure we will enjoy it.

That's been the type of price for similar accomodation, so fingers crossed we can get one at a similar rate.

That's all really useful to know. Thank you!
