Thinking of booking a cottage which looks to be right by the beach in Maidens, Ayrshire for Easter. Does anyone live near here or has anyone had a holiday in this area? - will there be enough for a 9/7 year old to do and is the area OK?

I've spent a fair amount of time up there as we have relatives in Girvan.

I would say it is a lovely area, but it is rural Scotland so the activities are limited to walking/cycling/playing on the beach. Lots of farms around and some have other attractions too. It is an area that many Scots go to on holiday, and there are lots of caravan and static home parks around, so a fair amount of holiday activity things to do I think.

There is a castle (Culzean castle I think) nearby if it rains, and a fab ice cream shop in Girvan. We have always had fun up there but haven't tried to entertain 7 and 9 year olds

Hi Onlyaphase - thanks for that. I always get irrationally nervous when booking holidays in an area that I don't know well and a few words of encouragement are very welcome! Beach and ice cream sound ideal.

Actually, now I've thought about it there will be lots of stuff to do for families with older children, like boat trips round the Ailsa Craig see here

And lots of local walks including a cannibal trail here and there are other things listed on that website too
