Just wondering what your favourite things to do with kids in London are.... We are going to be based for at least a month in London over March with dd11 &dd10.
We will be living near the Natural History Museum, V&A which they have been to before and loved. They are interested in just about everything.....would love to hear your ideas.

Holland Park's great.. peacocks, foresty bits... a nice cafe, some great play eqiupment.

Its near Kensington High street for shopping.

There's the river buses which are always fun, you can get off near the Tower of London and St Katherine's dock is a short walk away. You can pay to go in, or you can just walk around the outside. You can walk over tower bridge which is right there and see the gap where it lifts up when big boats come through. there's even a museum in the bridge if you want to pay.

Greenwich is good for a day out.. the cutty sark, a little market, the obervatory in the park where you can stand with one foot either side of the meridian line ... and the naval museum... you can walk along the river, and there are loads of nice cafe's

There are lots of free museums in london, and Time Out has a section on kids and family events, as well as free stuff.

Swimming's always good... might be a bit cold for the open air ponds on Hampstead heath, but the Lido in London Fields is heated, and it's near the museum of childhood in bethnal green, and the Geffrey museum ( both free entry I think)

Brick Lane Market at the weekend... with lunch at an indian cafe?

Columbia Road flower market on Sunday mornings

I'll be looking out for some more ideas on here later

Lauree, thank you so much for all your fantastic ideas. The girls balked a bit at swimming in the pond though ! ......we are dragging them away from the beach near Melbourne where we live. We are in the middle of a very hot summer and they are not sure at all about a month or more in the cold!
I will google some of the other things you mentioned. I have a couple of guide books but it makes such a difference knowing what other kids have enjoyed.

Haven't heard of Nation or Borough Market....thank you. Afternoon tea sounds a great idea and so does a concert. Thank you and good luck with babybecks!

Maybe forget the open air swimming! I guess it might be a bit of a disappointment after australian beaches! BabyBecks got some great ideas there too... haven't thought about chinatown... , thanks

Ah, I forgot Kew gardens...good for everyone for a day out and a picnic.

Dennis Severs House near brick lane might be fun

John Soane Museum in Lincoln's Inn fields this is free entry, so I they don't like it, no problem... it's nearish to Coram's fields which is a fantastic playground with animals right in the centre of town, and then you could go on to the British museum.

Dennis Severs and John Soane are definitely for adults and more mature kids, not littleys

I hope you have a lovely time. This is making me realise I need to get out and enjoy London more!

I would do the following with girls: Tower of London, Hampton Court, Borough Market/Globe Theatre/Tate Modern/London Eye, British Museum, Wallace Collection, Horseback riding in Hyde Park, High Tea at the Wolesley/Browns/The Berkeley, Petersham Nursery/walk along river/Richmond, day trip to Paris on Eurostar (not really London, but fantastic to do!), London Wetlands Centre, Notting Hill on Saturday morning (yes, very touristy but still amusing).

I hope that everyone has a fabulous time here.

Sunshinemummy · 07/02/2010 10:08

Sofaqueen has a good list. I'd also consider doing:

Kew which is wonderful
Open air theatre in Regent's Park good
The Horniman Museum is excellent
London Zoo is pretty ace, although expensive
Spitalfields market on a Sunday is pretty cool
Jack the Ripper walk round the City and East End quite good fun

We went with our DDs (9 & 11) and enjoyed a show, Natural History Museum, Hamleys (!!) Tower of London and the bus tours.

stroudgreenie · 08/02/2010 20:31

Just make sure that you buy Time Out every week too!

jkklpu · 08/02/2010 20:35

Definitely Greenwich, which has the planetarium now, as well as a fantastic park and all the other things mentioned above.

Also interesting to get the DLR through Docklands/Canary Wharf and up to Bank - some of the most obscene wealth and poverty in the country almost cheek-by-jowl
