We're thinking of Skye for a summer holiday in July...does anyone know of nice places to stay (cottage/interesting accommodation)? Also, we've 2 DDs (8 & 4) so what can we do with them there? What are the beaches like? Are some more sandy than others? Any information would be gratefullt received as I've never done Skye. Thanks

Hi there

I have a place on Skye, in the beautiful village of Isleornsay.

Isleornsay is known locally as ?the most attractive postcode on Skye? and with stunning views across the ?Sound of Sleat visible from every room in our house, you?ll soon discover why.

There are four bedrooms (King, double, twin and single).

Special features include a spacious lounge with open fireplace, well equipped eat-in kitchen and 3 washrooms.

Other highlights include a half-acre garden, countryside views to rear and ample parking.

Take a short stroll down the hill to ?the E.I.? where you will find both locals and visitors enjoying good food, music and a cosy atmosphere in this family friendly pub. Kids allowed until 7.30pm. Take our torch for the way home (but will still be light in July)!

Skye is a magical island, which has something to offer the whole family. World-class climbing is available in ?the Cuillins? but Skye also boasts a wealth of more moderate family walks in the country and around the coast. Beaches vary, some are rocky and some are coral or pebble. Great for kids to go rock pooling and collect 'trinkets'. White sandy beaches are a short ferry ride away either at Morar on the mainland, or on the isle of Lewis.

Sleat (the district the house lies in) is the southernmost point of the island of Skye, where the Gulf Stream ensures there is colour and greenery all year round. The north end is more wind swept and has less in the way of greenery.

Whilst on Skye you might want to explore the islands castles and coves. You can do this on foot, on horseback by bicycle or even in a kayak!

Or if you like being at sea, why not take a ferry trip to a neighbouring island, get up close to nature on a whale watching trip, take a day trip on a yacht or fishing boat and for the very adventurous, visit one of the island?s dive sites.

Food and drink lovers can taste gastronomic delights and local produce at world famous restaurants and eateries or take a tipple at the Talisker Whisky distillery.

Even if you prefer to stay indoors you?ll be well entertained as we?ve provided a range of toys, games, books, CDs and DVDs for you to enjoy and our well equipped kitchen means you?ll have the utensils and appliances you need to rustle up your own ?fine fare?.

Here's a summary of the house facilities:

? Sleeps 7 guests
? Comfy lounge
? 2 bathrooms and 1 shower room (3 toilets)
? Oil fired Rayburn
? Plenty of hot water
? Large eat-in kitchen, seats 8
? Wooden cot on request
? Travel cot
? High chair & child seat for dining table
? Microwave
? Fridge & Freezer
? Dishwasher
? Washing machine
? Iron and Ironing Board
? Hair Dryer
? FreeSat TV with digital radio
? Wireless internet connection
? Telephone (local calls)
? Toys and games
? Well stocked book shelves
? DVD player & DVD collection
? Wii and X-box (including games)
? Stereo with ipod docking station
? CD collection
? Local maps and information
? Open fireplace
? Free firewood and coal
? Interesting garden for children to play in and explore
? Plenty of parking
? Torch (for walking back from the pub!)

Hope that helps! Its currently available the first second and third weeks in July. I can send you some photos if you send me your email address.

Kind regards
Ailsa

Erm .. the beaches on Lewis/harris are great but at least 1hr 45 mins on the boat plus a 20-30 min drive afterwards. Not short! And Sleat is an hours drive from Uig, where the boat goes from - on a good day. There aren't sandy beaches on Skye.

I don't like things being misdescribed - I am also a tourism operator (In Harris, as it happens!). Skye is great, but don't go for the beaches or thinking that they are an easy day trip!

That's true Weegiemum and I'm sorry if I gave the wrong impression above about the length of the ferry journey by using the wording 'a short ferry ride'.

There are actually some sandy beaches in Sleat, but they are small and not your classic long white stretch of sandy beach (some only sandy when the tide is out, some have rocks etc as well as sand).

Unlike Harris, Skye is not well known for sandy beaches that's for sure.

There are however, plenty of beaches and lots and lots to do with kids
