We are off to Center Parcs at Longleat and I wondered about booking a ride this time.

Has anyone been? I am looking at either the 'Wrangler' or 'King's Chase', as I am experienced.

its out of the park - you have to drive there

Yes, they take you now apparently. It is more that I wondered if it was any good or a bit boring, and whether we would we be stuck on old nagbags quiet horses.

Yes I did a few years ago, rode in a western saddle, it was just a plod, no trotting or anything faster, but we did go round the edge of longleat safari park and saw some giraffes from horseback which was nice. Best thing to do is try and get the phone number of the stables and ring and ask them what to expect.

captainpig · 14/01/2010 18:44

Oh yes, just remembered, there were a couple of slipping western saddles on the ride I went on, don't know if this was an ongoing problem, but if I was going on a faster ride I think I'd stick to traditional style.

Ok, thanks. I might try to find out where they ride from.

I quite fancied the western, just for something different- it's only eer any good on the right horses though, and so often riding stables are dissappointing if you are used to your own,

There are two levels of the western, it says you must be able to control a horse in open space at a canter for the 'advanced' one. One of the other advanced rides says you must be experienced in rising trot

I'll probably fall off at a walk now, and it would serve me right for smugness

I rode at elverden (hmmmm spelling) i was dissapointed, i rode on the advanced, and it really was not worth the money, may try longleat next if you put up a good review

Tomatefarcie · 14/01/2010 20:59

I rode at ELveden too, and was disappointed too. My horse was huge, but the instructor's horse was tiny, so when she was cantering, I was still trotting behind. It was supposed to be a fast ride for experienced riders, but I spent my time trying to keep my horse from overtaking her.

I did mention it to her, but she said "oh well, nevermind"...I did find it very expensive for what it was, but had some very enjoyable moments too, especially spotting gorgeous wildlife.

Hth

thanks, I guess it will depend on the instructor and the others on the ride too. I'm really not sure. I might do the western as at least it'll be a bit less nothingy if it is a plodfest, quite fancy seeing the giraffes!

Having worked in a riding stables as a teen I know we always thought it was fun to give the snotty experienced rider the worst horse , so I'll try to be careful how I word my queries....they will probably tell me off about my pre-milleneum hat too.
