Welsh coast - best place to stay?

I know nothing about Wales, but DP has some family that live in Aberaeron and we thought we might combine a visit to them with our summer holiday next year. We don't necessarily need to be that close to them, but would like to be by the coast. We don't really like holiday camps/caravans etc but would like to hire a nice cottage somewhere along the coast. Could anyone advise me what the coast is like and which areas are busy/quiet/tacky/noisy etc? many thanks.

I love the Lleyn peninsula, especially out beyond Abersoch - where it gets quite wild. Can be a bit bleak if the weather is not good but mountains, and glorious beaches. Porth Oer is amazing.

Also spectacular Rhossilli on the Gower

National Trust have lovely cottages on both peninsulas

Other people love St David's

thanks for your replies. We're travelling from Norfolk so the journey will take forever! Be much quicker for us to go to France! We thought we would probably do a day trip/2 days with the relatives - as they are quite elderly then staying with them maybe too much for them, so we'd kind of play it by ear. So anywhere within a 2 or 3 hour drive would be fine. We will probably take our small tent too, so that it gives us the option of staying in their garden at a local campsite as well.

we are going to pembrokeshire next summer as that sounds nice - bit like cornwall with less people. went to Gower before which was good - lovely beaches - and near swansea if it rains/for shopping etc - was windy though. i have relatives who live in the south and some of that is quite ropy - they have to lock everything up or it gets nicked
