DH and I are going to Cheltenham for a couple of days for our anniversary this weekend. What is there to do? I know nothing about the town! We have got dinner in our hotel the first night but that is all that is arranged.

We had a fab weekend break in Cheltenham a few years ago (pre-DC) and loved it. We stayed at The Kandinsky, but I think that is being renovated now.

We ate at The Daffodil one night, which was great. The shopping is good, and there are lots of nice cosy places to have lunch.

If I were you, I would make the most of it being just the two of you and snuggle up and keep warm

Oh, hi twofalls - just realised it was you|! How's the pregnancy going?

GColdtimer · 02/12/2009 13:20

Just had a quick look and there is a street fair and christmas markets on (although mulled wine is a no-no given the fact I am pg). Also, we might go to the cinema. And we are staying at the hotel du vin which should be lovely and cosy. I can't wait, i have to say.

Glad you had a nice few days there. The restaurant looks lovely.

The Christmas market isn't hugely exciting tbh, but theres some nice bits to wander round.

The Daffodil is lovely, and we go to a really nice noodle bar on the high street a lot

spicemonster · 02/12/2009 13:27

We went on a really nice circular walk along a river but if you're very pg it might be a bit much. Lots of nice little shops in pedestrianised streets - quite a few one offs and a nice arcade thing.

There is also quite a big branch of JoJo Maman which I spent rather a lot of money in

The Christmas market is lovely - it is one the promenade, and although you have to avoid the mulled wine, you can have those lovely german sausages instead.

The Hotel du Vin is lovely, very close to the centre of town so you are within walking distance of everything.

I used to live in Cheltenham, and I would recommend 9as it so bloody cold at the moment) just ambling around the shops (The Promenade and specifically Montpellier area have lovely shops) and looking at the lovely architecture. Avoid the High Street as it is like any other High Street in England and will be mobbed at the weekend.

The Daffodil is a lovely restaurant - really beautifully done out (used to be a cinema) and the food is great. For lunches I can recommend Brasserie Blanc, which is in the Queens Hotel at the top of the promenade, Montpellier Wine Bar (Montpellier), and the best curry house in the whole world, Curry Corner (featured on Gordon's F Word couple of weeks ago) in Fairview. Also there is a Zizzi which is just normal pizza/pasta, however is housed in a beatifully converted church and has a great atmosphere.

They have a theatre but I think it is stuck in Panto mode at the moment. The cinema is in easy walking distance of hotel, just at the back of the High Street in a place called the Brewery complex. There is a bar called Apres next to the cinema, avoid going in there, it gets a bit rowdy.

Sunday lunch if you are there, there is a place called Hotel on the Park near Pittville park which does lovely Sunday lunches. Ditto a nice pub called the Langton (you will have to get a cab there as is a few miles out of town).

Think CMOT means Bar & Wok, it's brilliant in there, as cheap as you like but great chinese food.

If you want to drive about a bit can recommend going to Winchcombe, which is very pretty, or a bit further away into the Cotswolds, Broadway, a beautiful village.

Can I hijack slightly?
Does anyone know of a nice hotel including a Spa close to Cheltenham? Can't be too expensive!
Thanks.

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/12/2009 13:48

The only one I can think of is Cheltenham Park hotel link which is in Charlton Kings, just outside Cheltenham itself (about 2 miles from town centre). The only other ones i can think of are Cowley Manor or Hilton Puckrup Hall, which are outside Cheltenham itself.

Think the Hotel du Vin may have a spa, thouigh I could be wrong on that.

However, there is a lovely spa in Cheltenham ityself called Chapel Spa, which has a steam room/hammam thing which you can book for couples use www.chapelspa.co.uk/rasul.php which is lovely, so you could book a cheaper hotel/B&B and use that.

GColdtimer · 02/12/2009 13:57

, I am very well thank you. How are you?

Thank you GetOrfMoiLand, that's all really helpful. We are going tomorrow for 2 nights, back on Saturday.

Thats the one I mean GetOrfMoiLand - the food is lovely, the staff are ace, and the prices v reasonable.

Broadway is beautiful, and the drive there very pretty too.I think they have all their christmas lights up now.

The Chapel spa is v good (sent SIL there for her 40th)

I haven't been there but the Cheltenham Chase hotel looks like the spa is nice

CMOTdibbler · 02/12/2009 14:05

Oh, and I wouldn't recommend the Cheltenham Park - I went there last year for a meeting and my room was pretty grim

ajandjjmum · 02/12/2009 14:17

Thanks for the help following my hijack! Just looked at the Chapelspa - looks lovely, but the friend I'm looking for is recovering from breast cancer, which it seems may be a problem.
Have a fab time twofalls - very jealous!!
