Thinking of taking my children to London for the day over half term. We live near Bristol so it will be quite a hike and I don't want to be bothered driving through the London traffic and negotiating the congestion charge etc.

So I am thinking of driving to somewhere in West London and going in by tube.

Questions:

Where would be a good place to park the car and get on the tube eg somewhere easily accessible from the west with easy, safe parking?

How much does it cost to travel on the tube these days? In my day, a one day travelcard was the way to go but is that still the case?

How much is a child's fare?

Anything else I should consider?

I know London - I lived there for years - so no worries on that score, just I am out of touch with public transport issues.

Thanks!

Train fares to London - I looked up return tickets from Bristol to London on Monday 26 October on First Great Western's website, going at 10.15 am and returning at 7 pm from Paddington. I get a ticket price of £40.60. You would need a railcard which makes it £64.60, but the railcard would be valid for a year.

I'm sorry that I'm in totally the wrong area of London for your needs - north east London - as if you drive, could any mumsnetters help you out with a visitors parking thing near their home?

Oh thanks for your thoughts Elkiedee, that is so kind. Don't worry, I have both my brother and sister living in north London where I could park for free. And lots of friends dotted about the place. I was only thinking how I could do it without having to call on them but I can see it is becoming likely I will have to change my original plans.

I got the same fare as you so at last two inquiries have resulted in the same price!
