What to do/see in York with a 12 & 6 year old please, travelling next week ......

Hi - we are visiting York for 2 days next week - can you please let me know what are the best places to visit with my 12 & 6 year old. Is the Jorvik, Dundgeons, Castle etc worth paying the money and visiting? Thanks in advance for any information.

The train museum is free and interesting of they like that sort of thing
If DS was 12 or 6 I'd definitely take him to Jorvik and the Dungeons cos he's a bloodthirsty little geezer at 3.5

Thanks for responding Iklboo - I looked on the internet and some people were advising not to take young children but I know my daughter who is 12 would love it - do you think my son of 6 would be okay and it is worth pre-booking the tickets?

DIG is fantastic, you can book a joint ticket with Jorvik online an avoid the queues. My DS's (11 & 7)enjoyed DIG far more than Jorvik. Both of them enjoyed walking on the walls pretending to be vikings, which was good as there are lots of walls and it's free!

Definutely the railway museum - I went when i was 14 and thought it was great. Jorvik also good but 6 yr old might find a bit scary if a bit sensitive - my 6 year old didn't like the similar thing in Chester last year when 5. Merchant Adventurers Hall is quite interesting, so is the Castle museum. And it's just a lovely city to wander around.

there's a mad wee park along the river where a flock of geese runs about, definitely take a wander along there. it's right next to some tower or other, near to the novotel. i don't know if we were just unlucky (easy to be in an unfamiliar city) but we never found anywhere really nice to eat with the children.

If you do only one of DIG and Jorvik make it DIG, but I'd get a joint ticket and do them both -- do prebook given it's summer. The Castle museum is really good too (it's near there that the geese wander around).

The walk around the walls is good and there is an odd little museum about the Richard III and the princes in the tower tucked away in one of the towers where they put forward arguments for and against his killing them.

Another vote for the railway museum, especially if you might go to see the 'Railway Children'. They did it last year on one of the platforms and it was FAB. The young one from life on mars/ashes to ashes (now also 'Slug' in corrie) was in it, as was one of the ex einspectors from the Bill. It was absolutely brilliant and i'm pretty sure they;re doing it again this year
