the girls will be 4,6 & 7 and may have my 12 year old too (or not!).

Haven't been up there for YEARS so apart from the obligatory trip to Whitby what would you recommend.

Oh I am a Teesider! Was born and bred in REdacr - Mum still lives there. I secon Saltburn - beautiful beach, great pier, and a lovely little town. Go to Redcar for rides and amusements and a lemon top ice cream from pacittos (medal wining ices!), Yarm is a lovely day out, as it Guisbrough - loveley market town.

Billingham forum is a good day out for rainy days. Also reccommend Stewarts Park and Preston Park. You could go up Roseberry Topping.

Lightwater Valley is good (near me now as I live in Harrogate) but we discovered Brimahm Rocks recently - only £4 per car and the kids loved it, so did we actually - and teh dog!!

DrNortherner · 13/08/2009 20:55

Ralway museum fa at york btw, and royal armouries in leeds.

CarGirl · 13/08/2009 21:00

what is there to do at Yarm for a day????

GemBean · 13/08/2009 21:13

hey Cargirl, I live in Yarm, I would recommend Newby Hall which is about half an hour down the A19, and Monk Park Farm which is on the way to York. There's a good soft play on the outskirts of Darlington if the weather is bad called Adventure Point. Yarm itself is only really good for mooching around the shops and lunch (the Hide is my fave).

GemBean · 13/08/2009 21:16

also meant to say that i think Billingham Forum is closed at the minute for refurbishment so don't bother going!

CarGirl · 13/08/2009 21:18

that's what I thought, I could drag them by the river, show them the viaduct, octaganol church, show them a few old haunts (dance school etc) and then you're done? Has the tannery long gone? I'm sure the old methodist church has too (not the octagonaly the one at the bottom of the wynd next to the CoE church).

OP posts:
GemBean · 13/08/2009 21:21

yep, tannery gone and I'm afraid I don't even know about another church.. must be gone. There is a boat that does trips up and down the tees from Yarm but I think it only goes wednesdays and saturdays. Called the Teesside Princess, don't know any more details, sorry. Do you mean Harlequin dance school? Its still there, my dd goes!

Chamomile · 13/08/2009 21:22

This place is worth a vist. Need to book ahead.www.theforbiddencorner.co.uk/visitorInformation.html

BelleAtrix · 13/08/2009 21:23

Hamsterly forest, especially if you have bikes.
Yarm for the day? - not much for kids but there is a butterfly farm on the road in to Middlesborough just beyond Eaglescliffe.
Big sheep little cow (or is it the other way round?!)
North York Moors railway (Middlesborough to Whitby)

Have fun!

CarGirl · 13/08/2009 21:23

I know the dance school is there I'm still in contact we her first husband who built it and pretty much convert the house from 2 cottages!

Is the police station still there?

Chamomile · 13/08/2009 21:26

GemBean · 13/08/2009 21:27

how funny! Yes, police station there and next to it there is a "traditional sweet shop", good for your dds? You must remember Strickland and Holt? Its brilliant for browsing and there is a cafe at the back now.

My DC's really liked this castle. Just another ruined castle ,I suppose but in a lovely setting and very atmospheric.

Smurfgirl · 13/08/2009 21:41

I went to Harlequin dance school!!

(have put my suggestions earlier on so have nothing more to add but wanted to chime in with my love for the dance school)

GrimmaTheNome · 13/08/2009 21:44

re-iterate Newby Hall and Fountains and Brimham rocks (I used to live in Thirsk, pre-kids but we've been back to take DD to those)

The abbey near Osmotherly is Mount Grace Priory - its quite different to the usual big ruins like Fountains and Rievaux

Can't think of anything to do in Yarm though!

GemBean · 13/08/2009 21:45

With Miss Barbara Smurfgirl? or is she a new addition?(cannot guess her age at all)

Smurfgirl · 13/08/2009 21:48

I think so? It was a while ago, early 90s. It shut down because she had a breakdown (i think?) and I never went back

GemBean · 13/08/2009 22:04

ah yes, will be her then. Sorry CarGirl, gone off at a balletic tangent. I am quite new to Yarm and teesside, but love it here.

Trixel · 13/08/2009 23:16

hey cargirl

what about alnwick, for alnwick gardens, brilliant for a whole day? is that too far north?

also, for great seaside outing i would second saltburn, or robin hood's bay which is so very gorgeous.

if you're near harrogate then brimham rocks as others have said, is fantastic - you could combine that with a trip to fountains abbey which is beautiful and a lovely walk around the lake.

newby hall, just outside ripon, is also brilliant, but would probably be good for near to a full day rather than part of one.

bolton abbey is another great place for a walk, scenery, splodge in the river. you can get the steam train from there to embsay and back, and also very close to there is hesketh park farm which gives you a full day out!

if you are used to chessington and legoland do not, on any account, go to lightwater valley!

CarGirl · 14/08/2009 13:18

Yes Miss Barbara has always owned Harlequin, she was/is obessesed with them. She must be approaching 50 now? She has always had mental health issues and for a few years or so I used to go out clubbing with her so I knew her as my teacher then as a friend IYSWIM.
