Self Catering in Scotland - don't mind where - for a week in Aug

am toying with the idea of a week away with DH & the kids but we can't go far as DH only has holidays right before the schools go back and lack of pennies denies distance

don't mind where as long as its not in a tent - am not at one with nature

bumsrush, I'm from the west coast and we've family in Ayrshire so I wouldn't get away with going there - I'd just get questioned as to why am not staying with them as usual. Shame though as it looks great, thank you

there is a little bit of availability on Mull - check out the lodges/cabin type things

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 16/06/2009 00:08

Wigwam? Not really a wigwam, saves the hassle of putting up a tent, and its cheap.

What about Gullane/Aberlady/North Berwick? Lovely beaches ando not too far to drive from Fife.

dizzydixies · 16/06/2009 11:11

Northern that looks great but I'll need to check out the cost of the car over to Mull first as when we went up a few years ago it was quite pricey - thank you though

LightShines - not really my thing sorry I need a seperate room from the kids to get some sleep at least, thank you though

Auchenlarie in Dumfries and Galloway (South West Scotland). We have just got back from a break there and it was fab. The staff were incredibly helpful, we had a basic caravan but very clean and well equipped with a verandah and the most amazing sea view with mountains in the distance too. It has a private beach and is very reasonably priced too (aboout £340 for a week in mid aug) The surrounding area is stunning with castles, forests and a gorgeous beach (Mossyard) about half a mile up the road. If you go here you won't be disappointed

Based on my mantra 'west is best', although I live nearer to the east coast , how about Ullapool/ Gairloch/ Durness,Achiltiebuie?? you don't say if you want to be in the sticks or next to a village.
There are good self catering cottage links on undiscovered scotland website, i.e not linked to a big company so maybe less likely to be booked up or expensive??
www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/achiltibuie/achiltibuie/index.html
We are off to Harris on Friday, camping, its fairly cheap on the Uig/Tarbet ferry, once you have driven through skye!!, and the cottages are a bit cheaper. But then not much in the way of organised attractions, but then thats the best bit for me. We are going for beach stuff with our 2 years old & dog........hopefully not too much in the way of rain.....

Saltire · 20/06/2009 23:01

Auchenlarie is good - but then I'm from Dumfrieshhire so biased. It would be about 4 hours from Fife. Wish i was back in Fife. Or anywhere in scotland really

muggglewump · 20/06/2009 23:07

We went here just out of Plockton last year.

dizzydixies · 21/06/2009 16:04

Have you checked out some of the places listed on Away with the Kids website? Thistle Lodges,Sandyhill looks of particular interest when mentioning a tight budget just click((www.awaywiththekids.co.uk/accommodation/thistle-lodges-sandyhills.aspx here))On-site leisure facilities include free use of an indoor heated swimming pool with sauna, together with free access to a children's playground and boules courts. As part of the swimming pool buildings you will also find a small bar area, restaurant and courtyard for summer music entertainment. Adjacent to the lodges is a riding stable, from where rides out of all different standards (weeny rides upwards) can be arranged. Hope you find it of interest!(smile)

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 25/06/2009 17:25

Have you considered the Moray coast?

hotshot · 25/06/2009 18:04
