What to do and where to stay for a long weekend in the Lake District?

Can anybody recommend somewhere to stay in the Lake District? Ideally we're looking for a cottage and are open to any suggestions.

There will be me, my dh and our 8mo son.

Also, what places can people recommend?

I can recommend the cottages at Neaum Crag - it's a small site with 'log' cabins and a couple of flats on a wooded site between Ambleside and Coniston. There is a small heated swimming pool which you have access to if you rent a cottage there. We've found it a good place to take the children because there are easy walks around, sailing/boating on coniston water and in the afternoon or in rainy weather they go in the pool.

Many thanks Millarkie.

Anyone else?

Keswick is a good base for a holiday in the Lakes. The town is lovely with plenty places to stay, places to eat, a good park and, of course, Derwent Water.

You can get boats to various points around the lake and there is a good path around it so you can take a fairy easy walk as far or as little as you like really, i.e. walk to the next landing stage and get the boat back.

If you like longer walks and have a back-carrier for the baby then obviously there are many possibilities. Cat Bells is a splendid walk and you have fantastic views from the top.

For accomodation there are lots of possibilites. Two hotels I have stayed in and could particularlr recommend are 'The Keswick Hotel' and 'The Lodore Hotel'.

For cottages try these guys:

They have loads of properties all over the lakes. We had a lovely little cottage in Keswick through them a few years back.

We've stayed at www.lakeland-cottage-company.co.uk/property-details.php?ID=54 & at knott house farm: www.keswickcottages.co.uk/

Would recommend Keswick as a base, there's the public swimming pool with a wave pool & slide for the "bigger kids"!! Trotters farm up near bassenthwaite (I think!!) Haven't been yet myself, but will be going in June.
