Has anyone stayed at Durdle Door holiday park? I've just booked a very cheap week there in August

They had caravans on the website for £700 -£780 but when I called they had some very inexpensive older ones (not further from the sea and not with less amenities) than the newer ones - just a bit scruffier.

So I got a week in August for £500

Anyone been there? It looks like a lovely bit of Dorset - you can walk down the steep cliffs to the Durdle Door beach from the caravan site.

No but it is lovely there, just dont do what we did on our first visit and try and lug a huge poncey wicker ( wicker never looks spelt correct) picnic hamper from the top to the beach and back up again.

DH is going to be carrying the lounging chairs (he very fit ).

How bad are the steps - we have a very pully Springer Spaniel ??

We've just come back from a holiday in West Lulworth. Really, really lovely part of the country. Beautiful coast, and lots and lots of things to do. Don't bother with the overpriced dinosaur museum in Dorchester, do bother with driving to Norden and getting the steam train to Swanage for a day on the sandy beach there, do bother with athelhampton if you're into old houses. The GP surgery in wool is lovely too, as we annoyingly had to find out!

greatwhiteshark · 15/04/2009 13:26

Oh and don't park at Lulworth Cove car park - walk there instead - it's £3 for only 2 hours

scienceteacher · 15/04/2009 13:26

I haven't been to the holiday park but did visit Durdle Door last year.

Unless the holiday park has no pool facilities, I don't think you will be trekking to the beach every day. It is down some very steep steps, and when you get there, it is very uncomfortable pebbles (you struggle to walk on them, so once you find your spot, you tend to stay plonked there). The scenery is amazing though, and well worth the visit. There is something magical about walking along the cliff path in expectation, and then seeing it.

oooh, lovely info - thanks

As for the dog, my cocker spaniel loved going from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door. She was quite fearless on the steep steps. The area is dog friendly and you can let the dog off the lead.

We also have a very pully springer spaniel and it was hard work with him , it would be
ok if you dont have lots of other stuff.

Dd loves swimming at that beach because it is is so magical but pebbles are hard work, we all have closed beach shoes for when we go there. Flip flops are a no no because the pebbles get under your toes.

We were at swanage this weekend and it was fab complete with Morris Dancers.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid - did they just offer the choice of the cheaper caravans when you rang or did you ask?

We would love a holiday this year but can't manage the £700p plus for school holidays, but £500 would be brilliant

twinsetandpearls · 15/04/2009 13:31

Most of Dorset is very dog friendly, our springer thinks he had died and gone to doggy heaven.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 15/04/2009 13:36

Wilts - No, the lovely woman offered, they had plenty of availability - the one we booked (first week in August) had subsequent availability for the rest of August. And they had another one too.

They had ones at £500 (plus £2.50 a day for the dog) which were 9 years old, £520 for ones 6 years old, and £580 I think for ones 4 years old.

She said all this without prompting.

I also had a week in Cornwall in August last year for £300 - very basic accomodation but in lovely North Cornwall.

I'm really excited now at all you've told me, it sounds lovely.

Brilliant thanks for that

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 15/04/2009 13:47

Where did you go in Cornwall last year?

saggyhairyarse · 15/04/2009 21:44

I've stayed there!

My Mum used to take me there every year camping but when we went we stayed in a static. The first was a bit doggy but the new one was immaculate.

I love it there!

Steam train is fab, also Moreton (where Laurence of Arabia is buried) has a cute tearoom and a good pond dipping area and is close to Bovington which has a brill museum.

BexieID · 15/04/2009 22:22

Been to Lulworth Cove/Durdle Door but not stayed at the park. We went 2 years ago and was knackered walking up the steps on the coastal path. DP carried a 15 month old Tom up there!

Laurie - hows your hand?

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 15/04/2009 23:53

Stripy - it was this place, basic but fine and just a few miles from all my favourite places - Trebarwith Strand, Boscastle, Rock, Padstow www.michaelstow-holidays.co.uk

My hand is a bit better thanks Bexie - I stuck a needle in it and poured tcp in - fingers not numb, just the immediate area round the puncture hurts.

Also meant to say that I got the Michaelstow holiday cheaper on ebay but I've just had a look and there's none on there at the moment

Haven't been to that site, but spent lots of family holidays in that area as a kid and still remember them fondly - is a lovely place.
