Holiday cottage - What would make you feel welcome?

We are moving to a house with a holiday cottage attached. Rural area two miles from beautiful coastline and two miles from nearest station. We have three young children and have our own ideas about what we need from a self catering cottage which is welcoming to a family. (DH would require an open fire - but there isn't one!) What is your list of requirements that would make a cottage really special for your holiday? From basics to luxury treats - we want to make it a real home from home for the whole family and obviously want people to recommend it and want to come back. What would do it for your family? Thanks for your thoughts.

We just come back from one, it had fishing nets/ crab lines and a selection of games and a dishwasher/ washer dryer but this was all a bit non appreciated because the place was dirty grimey dirty and it really spoilt it for me - bleurgghh other peoples hair makes me yack.

Do you wanna coffee machine in a self catering house?

Delamereroad · 05/08/2018 16:18

Ultra ultra clean
Spotless bathrooms
Good water pressure for power shower
Lots of coat hangers
Lots of towels
Washing machine /and dryer
Well equipped kitchen
But cleanliness above all else.

I have monitored this thread for years, as we renovated our previous house for holiday letting!

I agree 100%, that cleanliness is definitely, the most important thing in a holiday let (as a user myself!). To the extent that I don't trust anyone to do the changeover other than me!!!

I have also included pretty much anything that has been recommended on here from herbs & oil to a potty and child step! We even include 'extras' for unexpected arrivals!

Thank you all for your recommendations on this thread - as a result, we are consistently getting 5 star reviews in all areas, in the reviews we have received in this first year letting...

We just returned from a week s/c and we feel these points as important:

Clean and tidy, fairly modern, no casts of but purposely furnished/set up
Enough towels, loo paper, kitchen towels, starter set for washing up, hand soap, bit of basic cooking ingredients like salt, pepper, oil, ketchup, sugar, tea or coffee,
Enough mugs, cutlery, plates to last more than one meal
Decent pans and pots
Instructions how to operate complex TV set ups, where laundry facilities are if not in the house, heating (especially if the landlord is not on the grounds)
WiFi, especially if there is no mobile network, more than one code or a general password
Depending on the garden, bbq, nice simple garden furnitures, maybe a trampoline
Have items for children available but maybe not as constant, provide if requested like cot, high chair, sand toys
I like a bit of welcome gifts but I am not fussed if there is nothing. We do a biggish shop on the way to the cottage anyway.
Our cottage said we can use online shopping with Tesco and the address is recognised.

Norfolk is fab, we live there but in the south of the county!
One thing I also would do is set up an Instagram page
Agree with lots of ideas already posted however our children are 15 and 20 now so have lost track of items for families as it's not a priority so much
A few things to add
White bedding
Decent outside furniture
Outside lighting and solar fairy lights
Nice cushions and throws
Candles and tea lights as well as decent scented candles and room spray
Vase of flowers
Nespresso machine
Lots table lamps
Docking station

With regards to a real fire we have a snug that can't have one and have this

It's great as you can turn it on if you suddenly get chilly and doesn't need cleaning out but sadly not the real thing
Good luck with your move and new venture!
