Advice on Cornwall

After much humming and hawing, I think I might take DS to Cornwall on holiday. He's 6 so should be plenty for him to do. I've got a few questions.

  1. How long would it take to drive there? I live between Glasgow and Edinburgh and was going to go for a week.

  2. Are there any nice cheaper places to visit?

  3. Should I just say sod it and go for a fortnight.

Thanks

I meant cheap places to stay. I have a Youth Hostel card.

stop in the Cotswolds for a night on the way?

Otherwise it's a 12-13 hour trip

I'm totally biased towards Cornwall as I love it so I'm not recommending anywhere else.

I love Cornwall but only when it doesn't rain...last summer was horrible! But enough said. When are you thinking of going?

Distance - from you - wow, really long drive. It takes us from SE London 5-6 hours to get to Land's End, but you have to leave super early (like 5am). Go on one of those websites like the AA's which will do you a route and how long it takes - and then add at least an hour.

We always camp (which is dire if it rains...) but I have heard the YH in Lizard is really great. I only really know the extreme end of Cornwall but places i'd recommend are;
-Sennen Cove and the next beach down for body boarding/surfing
-Treen Beach (THE most beautiful beach in Britain) which is a good climb and quite scary but with a bit of help our kids did it when they were 3 upwards.
-Falmouth is beautiful and has a great indoor swimming pool with flumes, waves etc if the weather is bad (we lived in it last summer - I said I wouldn't mention the rain again, didn't I?)

I'd say go for 2 weeks as it's such a long drive for you. If the weather is good, there's NO PLACE like Cornwall.

We used to live in Edinburgh, PILs live in Cornwall so used to the trip. We have stayed in Hostels at Golant and The Lizard, both are lovely but cannot recommend the food at Golant.

Travelodges are basic (we have stayed in St Austell, handy for Eden and Heligan) but clean and fine if you are going to be out all day doing stuff.

If you go the M6, the Westmoreland Services at Shap is not part of a chain and has a lovely farm shop.

Its a long way for a week, but do you have to think in whole weeks? Why not allow yourself 2 days to get there, overnight stop on the way down, same on the way back with overnight stop somewhere different?

Cornwall is worth the effort. But we always holiday in Scotland - why would you want to leave? Skye for me any day!

gscrym · 28/01/2009 17:54

Scotland is great for holidays and I love Skye as well, but only when armed with industrial strength midge repellant.

I was just thinking in weeks as I have 2 weeks off in July. DH is diving at Scapa Flow for the second week so if he goes, will only be with us for the first bit.

I looked at flying to Bournmouth (£100 for me and DS return flights). Is it far from Bournmouth to Cornwall? Was thinking I could hire a car for a bit or just do trains. Am happy to take any advice I can get.

Who did you fly with Aimsmum? This sounds like a good way to go.

There isn't really anywhere cheap in Cornwall in the summer holidays. Even camping is pretty pricey. I seem to recall £20 a night in St Ives even in September, but not checked.

Hi gscrym, we're in Glasgow and flying down to Plymouth in July with...ehm...Fly southeast I think they are called. Anyway its working out around £200 for 4 return flights which isn,t bad.

We're going for 12 days simply due to getting the cheapest flights on certain days. DD1 is a real homebody so I'm thinking she'll find it quite long but 1 week seemed too short.

How about staying the night somewhere of you're going to drive? It's a pretty big task doing it in a day.
