Looking for a cottage in Cornwall for 6, as cheap as poss, public transport nearby

Me, dd, dd's best friend, her mum and the grandmas are all hoping to go on a holiday together this May over the half term break. We don't have a lot of money but have all had some hard times in the last year and thought this might cheer us up.

We've been searching online and almost everything is beyond our price range or is inaccessible without a car.

So I'm wondering if any MNetters have any suggestions of where to look / places they've stayed.

TIA

Bosinver is accessible by public transport, but can be pricy. It is very good value though if your DD is young enough to enjoy their soft play barn, trampoline, climbing frames, zip wire, animal feeding and play area. They'll also lend buckets, spades etc. It is just outside St Austell.

Bosinver

Thanks, I'll check it out. Our dd's are both just turned 6.

Any other suggestions?

I've only ever been there, I'm afraid. Have you tried any of the chalet or caravan parks? There is a lovely one right on the beach, next to a bus stop but I can't remember the name. I'll ask DH later if he remembers.

imaginaryfriend · 16/01/2009 13:40

Thanks. We wanted to avoid a caravan park if possible as my mum is 73 and needs a 'real' bed.

We've seen some cottages around the £400-600 a week mark but they're all booked. We're a bit late I guess.

A chalet would have a real bed. We stayed in a basic chalet last year on a haven site, it was fine. The site in Perranporth would be no good for you as its quite far out, but dont dismiss chalets or caravans

I know you've said to sleep 6, but how many bedrooms? Are you happy with 3 or will some people prefer not to share with others?

Surfermum · 16/01/2009 13:58

What about this one in Looe?

Curlew cottage.

I haven't been there myself, but it's £559 for half term week.

I'd imagine public transport links are quite good.

Does it have to be Cornwall? Dorset is cheaper and very beautiful! I don't know where you live, but the Scottish borders just north of Northumberland are a) incredibly beautiful with the most amazing beaches, and b) MILES cheaper than Northumberland, both in terms of accommodation and cafes etc. Good luck finding somewhere!

imaginaryfriend · 16/01/2009 15:17

3 bedrooms would be perfect.

We thought of Cornwall as it's so beautiful and dd loves it. I don't know anything about Dorset so don't know where to start looking but I'm open to the idea.

We're in SE London and a trip to the Scottish borders might be too far for the elder and younger among us!

We've just booked with www.helpfulholidays.com. Their search facility is ace as you just click on the wee map then you can specify no. of bedrooms, near beach/railway station etc.

We're off to Kingsand/Cawsand in July and I can't bl**dy wait

imaginaryfriend · 16/01/2009 15:52

That's a great site, thanks.

Any more tips?

We stayed here a couple of years ago

It was great - had everything we needed. It is very close to the sports centre (walking distance), and just off the main road into Truro.

Littlefish · 19/01/2009 13:11

Just noticed you want to go in May - this place isn't available until June. It's £443.00 in June. Is that too much? Would you consider taking them out of school for a week? The SATs would be over

imaginaryfriend · 19/01/2009 14:11

We wanted to avoid taking them out of school as my friend's dd has a few other things which will mean her having to take some time out of the term.

The place looks great otherwise, shame it's not available in May.

We can go up to £500 so it would also have been in budget.

It might be worth you e-mailing the owner. I know that in previous years she has rented the property out to mature students during term time as it's so near the college. Maybe her students are leaving earlier than usual????? Might be worth an e-mail.

fruitshootsandheaves · 19/01/2009 18:38

Its not cornwall but we went here in october 2007 it was absolutely lovely. The mose spacious, cleanest cottage we have ever stayed in.

imaginaryfriend · 19/01/2009 21:37

I've emailed them LittleFish, you never know!

fruitshoot, that was lovely but well beyond our budget unfortunately.
