Holidaying in Scotland

If you were to have a summer holiday in Scotland with a 3 and 1 year old, where would you go?

We're already off for the Festival for a few days but would like to do something more rural.

Can anyone give any suggestions, please?

NE Fife - I'm biased because I live here, but there are great beaches, lovely places to walk, the odd castle etc to visit, and it's just really nice, and handy for Edinburgh.

i'll bump this as i was just about to ask the same thing! except i'll have a 4 and 1 year old. i've been looking at hoseasons as they have some holiday parks with lodges (not keen on a caravan) but not sure how nice they are. if you've loads of money i would recommend crief hydro - fantastic facilities but not sure we can justify the cost. may end up just renting a cottage somewhere - we've done that in the winter in aviemore before. we've also stayed in the hilton at coylumbridge which was nice - but again that was in the winter so handy for reindeer and skiing.

Arran - it's described as scotland in miniture. Very scenic & isolated

We lived in Scotland and have holidayed there many years since. Can recommend Gullane/North Brewick coast. esp. Yellowcraigs beach. Easily accessible from city in bad weather, local eateries, safe becahes.

if you're going to be in edinburgh, then I would second east lothian coast or NE Fife as ncie holiday places.

Personally I'm addicted to Mull but it may be a bit of a trek for you. Perthshire is lovely - Dunkeld or Aberfeldy are good bases - or Pitlochry but I find Pitlochry a bit too tourist focused.

I love Scottish holidays - but you do need to take your waterproofs and jumpers and not rely on sun - then you'll be pleasantly surprised or well prepared come what may.

am with Habbibu as we're also NE Fife and its great - lovely beaches and loads for the kids too

agree also with Northernlurker, the weather can be a tad erratic up here lol

I agree with Mull too (or Skye) but depends how far North you already live, as the journey can be a trek with tinies!

When kids were small we tended to get up 4am with kids in their PJ's, get a head start on all the traffic and be half way there by breakfast time.
