Thanks Pan. Yes, looks much better, ta. Now, it's people like YOU that make Mumsnet a good place to be.

Well we went to Skye in 2000 and everafter have done Mull. Personally I found Skye ever so slightly depressing and run down - we stayed in Uig I think and quite a few places had shut down and it was all a bit flat. Great scenery but we find Mull to have much more of a lively vibe. Of course we haven't been for best part of a decade so it may have picked up a bit. If you're looking for a change from Mull though have you considered Coll and Tiree? Friends of ours rave about them! Book soon whatever you do - in contrast to Soprana's experiences we have always found Mull - well the bits we want! to book up quickly.

Similar to the Skyelonghouse but a little smaller and much better located there is this place www.calath.co.uk it is a 15 min walk to the Old Inn at Carbost - a great pub with food, and the Talisker distillery.

Like the Longhouse it is amazingly warm, with stunning views.

Before Skye we are having a week around Aviemore/Loch Garten area, and afterwards we are having a few days (2 or 3 nights I can't remember) on Muck! I can't wait to go there: I am so intrigued as to what such a tiny island is like.

AMumInScotland · 05/01/2009 21:10

We stayed at Lochbay boathouse once. It was a very nice cottage, right by the sea. But it rained. The whole time. And there is very little to do when it rains, so bring plenty of entertainment with you!

ilovelovemydog · 05/01/2009 21:16

we stayed here

Brilliant...

Pan · 05/01/2009 23:40

AMum - I have stayed in Lochbay boathouse. 1999. Massive windows over looking the loch, views out towards the Outer Hebrides. Had a glorious afternoon eating lobster and drinking red wine at the Stein Inn. Fabulous time.

dizzydixies · 06/01/2009 20:41

Lochbay boathouse looks lovely but its all booked up (just as well at £1050 for a week )

the Old Croft house more our budget but also booked

ah well back to the drawing board of where to go with the kids this summer!!

The mainland off Skye is lovely too, lots of self catering available too, don't give up just yet

dizzydixies · 06/01/2009 20:56

I'm not exactly fussed where we go if I'm honest as long as its somewhere! We were Mull & Oban 2007, had a few days in Crieff last year and will have DD aged 6, DD2 aged 3 and DD3 aged 1 with us this year

just a little break away if you know what I mean

OP posts:
mrsdisorganised · 06/01/2009 20:59

Yes...these 'breaks' are few and far between! We're going down to Devon to revisit my childdhood in May and i can't wait! First break for us all in 3 years!

dizzydixies · 06/01/2009 21:04

I would LOVE to got to Devon and Cornwall etc - just a bit far for us at the moment

we have to do a family thing in Spain in April for a christening but I don't count that as a relaxing holiday and at some point we'll have to go to Ireland to see the PIL - also NOT relaxing so I just wanted somewhere for us and the kids for even a long weekend if I can't get a week

I start back work from matty leave in Aug so was hoping for before that

Hello, we had 2 weeks in Skye lat summer and really loved it (born and bred in Surrey but didn't spot any resemblance!) I can recommend two lovely cottages - first probably better and nicer but also more of a trek ;)

boogeek · 06/01/2009 21:08

sorry about lack of links, am posting on the run

blithedance · 06/01/2009 21:12

We have been to Skye so many times I've lost count. It is beautiful and there's loads to do.

Last time (splitting the cost with another couple) we stayed here and it was a week of heaven. It was May, it didn't rain, we walked, played on Glenbrittle beach, went to castles and on boats and everything. Have to say the house was a stunner.

There are nice places in Elgol, although that's a bit remote, nearer Portree will give you more options.

Just take masses of midge repellant. And photos.

blithedance · 06/01/2009 21:12

Sorry just saw that Mrs Curly has been there too - Yay !

blithedance · 06/01/2009 21:14

Get yourself onto the Mallaig ferry and leave an hour to shop in Ragamuffin on the pier at Armadale!

mrsdisorganised · 06/01/2009 21:14

Dreading the drive down to Devon....we're further than you I think

dizzydixies · 06/01/2009 21:20

blithedance it looks LOVELY there but all booked already - arse - always next year I suppose!!

Dizzy, we stayed here in Portree last summer for a few days and although it was basic accommodation it was comfortable, next to a very family orientated hotel with bar and had a bouncy castle the kids used day in day out and the accommodation was only £30 a night for the 2 bed cottage

dizzydixies · 06/01/2009 21:23

missionary booked up as well but springfields looking good at the moment

there may be hope yet!!!

mrsdisorganised where are you then?!?

OP posts:
mrsdisorganised · 06/01/2009 21:26

Near Skye...don't really want anyone in RL to find me here although now it may be obvious

dizzydixies · 06/01/2009 21:27
