Which is the best part of Scotland to go for a holiday?

Am thinking of booking a holiday for my dp's birthday. I have 3 dc's aged 10,6 and 2. I think dp has family in Scotland and pretty sure he has mentioned the Scottish highlands, but can't remember where. I know he wants to go up there, but I can't ask him because it will be a suprise. Anyway can someone reccomend me an area so I can start looking for somewhere to stay, and also give me some idea of what we might be able to do. TIA

In my day you had to knock at the back door of the bakery and ask for Sam!

seeker · 02/01/2009 00:31

Oh the fudge doughnuts! Once tasted never forgotten.

Great Glen Water Park

But the BEST way to holiday in the area is to hire a boat from Caley Cruisers. We've done this a couple of times but I wouldn't do it with children as young as yours.

All night bakeries - does anyone remember the one in Newington in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is a great place to visit (TONS to do), even if you just stop over on your way up to the Highlands. There's tons of threads on here on 'things to do in Ed' if you search.

mawbroon · 02/01/2009 11:06

It was the Slateford Road one that I used to frequent.

slackrunner · 02/01/2009 11:37

Ahh, mine was the Nicholson Sq one. It scares me how much the baker used to recognise me and my flatmates

auntypurple · 02/01/2009 14:41

Thanks again for all the replies, looks like i got things all mixed up anyway. DP really wants to see his family in Arbroath, and mentioned how much he loves the highlands so thats were I thought it was. Have decided to take him to see his family this time, maybe we can go next year to the highlands.
I rang tourist information and they said park dean in Tummel valley is about 1hr 30mins drive from Arbroath, so I am thinking of booking that for 4 days in September. Does that sound ok? Thanks

The Tummel valley area is gorgeous. Very green and leafy.

I think it would take a bit longer than 1.5hrs to get to Arbroath from there though. You can either go over the moor on a wee road, or go to Perth and then zoom up the dual carriageway to Dundee then Arbroath.

KatieScarlett2833 · 02/01/2009 20:47

Ah the Slateford Rd bakers. Saved me from many a hangover......

MrsSeanBean · 02/01/2009 20:50

Dornoch has a great beach.

liath · 02/01/2009 23:58

ooh I remmeber the Nicholson Sq baker. Lived just round the corner so ofetn staggered back to my flat, meat pie clutched in my hand after a good night out.

spottedandstriped · 03/01/2009 09:23

Thumbwitch I was a student at St Andrews - and the bakery you are talking about is Fisher and Donaldson - fudge doughnut heaven. However, the all night bakery which was on the corner of South St has now gone

dizzydixies · 03/01/2009 15:22

fisher and donaldson lives on in both dundee and St Andrews

am happy to post fudge donuts to those in need as I still live nearby

saltiresaysSANTA · 03/01/2009 15:27

Oh stop mentioning F&Ds fudge doughnuts, and stop tlaking about Scotland, I'm homesick!

In answer to OP, the tummel Valley is lovely, far better than Arbroath (or tayside in general)

dizzydixies · 03/01/2009 15:29

easy not Saltire, any more chat about Tayside and I'll have to go and buy some fudge donuts and coffee towers and just tell you all about them!

this said, we moved across the bridge so I don't have a leg to stand on

dizzydixies · 03/01/2009 15:32

easy not now

saltiresaysSANTA · 03/01/2009 15:36

You can go off people!. Which side of the bridge are you on now then?

dizzydixies · 03/01/2009 15:37

we're in the kingdom now

saltiresaysSANTA · 03/01/2009 15:38

Wise move!.

dizzydixies · 03/01/2009 15:39

we certainly thought so, esp as the tolls area away now!

seeker · 03/01/2009 15:41

I used to live opposite the Kinness Fish Bar!

dizzydixies · 03/01/2009 15:43

lol, we've not made it that far, we're literally just over the bridge but thats good enough for us

saltiresaysSANTA · 03/01/2009 15:46

What, you mena you live in the little hut across from the petrol station?

SwedesInACape · 03/01/2009 15:46

Go to Tiree in the summer. Your children can go riding on Icelandic ponies, learn to windsurf and learn to sail. The beaches are fantiastic.

dizzydixies · 03/01/2009 15:47

that little hut is now an Indian take away - and a rather good one at that apparently

I had to phone the bloke in the petrol station to go and run across the dual carriageway to get the number for me and he did it bless him
