Tell me about the South East and East of England Coast

Yes, I know that's a bit general

DH and I talking about hols for next year. We live in Wales. I know Wales, the north west of England, Cornwall, Devon etc. We've been to Dorset on good family holidays. I once went to Brighton. And then if you go round the coast from there, I haven't been to any of it until you get to Cromer. And I can't say I have any sense of it really until you get to Bamburgh in Northumberland.

Can anyone fill in the blanks for me - and more importantly, tell us where is worth going?

We like beaches, interesting things to do and nice food.

Been to Italy for the last two years but don't think we can afford it this year.

suffolk heritage coast is lovely..... old fashioned, beaches, market towns, nature reserves..... not lots of "attractions" but castles, a zoo, otter sanctuary....

aldeburgh, southwold, walberswick....

all lovely.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 20/12/2008 23:14

Oh, and I go gooey over beach huts. Suffolk's got lots of them, yes?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 20/12/2008 23:15

gawd suffolk is nice
just so nice

controlfreakyhohohohohohoho · 20/12/2008 23:20

southwold has gorgeous stretch of painted huts.... walberswick your keep it real black foishermans huts.....

controlfreakyhohohohohohoho · 20/12/2008 23:21

fishermans not foishermans.....

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 20/12/2008 23:25

southwold, yes I see

Keep the ideas coming.

People go on about the norfolk broads. General comments there????

I went to Butlins in Skegness when I was five. Other than dancing in my mum's shoes to Abba, what should I be thinking re that area???

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/12/2008 10:23

bump

Are there places to avoid like the plague?

Broads are lovely though mostly inland.
North Norfolk coast is beautiful as is Suffolk especially around aldeburgh. Depends if you want beaches or not.
Brancaster beach is wonderful though more a walking beach. The beaches in Suffolk are great for children.

My favourite place of all though is Blakeney (norfolk)

bronze · 21/12/2008 10:31

avoid -yarmouth

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/12/2008 10:34

Walking beaches are good too. We don't do that much bucket and spade stuff.

What exactly does one do on the norfolk broads? Do you need to hire a boat? Or do you just go and look at them?

OP posts:
ILikeToHoHoHo · 21/12/2008 10:36

I would do the Broads for maybe one day and hire a boat. I find it all a bit same old, same old, but it's nice for a day.

I love the Suffolk coast, but then I'm a Suffolkian Walberswick and Aldeburgh are my favourite.

Lilymaid · 21/12/2008 11:16

Southwold is lovely, though definitely upmarket. It has the poshest pier in England with a nice restaurant on it. East coast can be bleak though when weather is not good - and the sun sets over the land not over the sea (unless you go to Hunstanton).

FrannyandZooey · 21/12/2008 11:21

i don't think there is any more to be said
if you haven't done suffolk coast then you must go, preferably now
agree southwold, walberswick
have fun!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/12/2008 13:00

Is any of Kent worth visiting?

Never been there.

christMAScomesbutonceayear · 21/12/2008 13:02

Whitstable is nice
I love East Anglian coast - can second Walberswick and Southwold - not so keen on Aldeburgh but love Dunwich which is bleakly atmospheric. Also N Norfolk coast

mysterymoniker · 21/12/2008 13:19

you must go to dunwich! apart from those bells tolling beneath the waves there are the largest red deer in UK, dartford warblers and new forest ponies

nice castles at framlingham, orford (meet the wild man)

wouldn't bother with felixstowe, lowestoft (although it has a nice beach)

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/12/2008 13:22

LOL what do you mean by bells beneath the waves?

Thanks for humouring me on this. Funny how you just have blank bits of the country. I know nothing about any of these places.

BoccaDellaNativita · 21/12/2008 13:22

Holkham beach in Norfolk is lovely.

Whitstable is lovely but tres 'Londoners down for the day/weekend'; if you get my artfully distressed drift wood.

mysterymoniker · 21/12/2008 13:23

durham was once a v important city, to rival london, but it fell into the sea

looks for link

it is spooky

christMAScomesbutonceayear · 21/12/2008 13:23

Dunwich is a drowned village and you can hear the church bells tolling beneath the sea. Minsmere is well worth a visit - v nearby.

mysterymoniker · 21/12/2008 13:24

obviously I mean DUNWICH

not durham, which is still on dry land AFAIK

here you go

mysterymoniker · 21/12/2008 13:29

PS you must visit Suffolk and Norfolk soooon before we ALL end up in the sea

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 04/01/2009 16:51

OK, just coming back to this now.

Sold on Walberswick, Aldeburgh etc.

Deal Deal Deal in Kent, where I live! We have miles of pebbly beach, great for cycling along as we have cycle paths everywhere. We have two most wonderful tudor castles, the Queen Mother used to stay in one. We have parks and swimming pool, indoor. We have a pier, beach huts, bandstand, live music every Sunday, local fishing boats that bring back the days catch, when its clear you can see the cliffs of France, bring your passport, 5 miles down the road hop on a ferry and have a lovely day in Calais, we have hundreds of pubs, lovely individual shops, fantastic places to eat, oh and rock pools for the kids! Yep I love it!
