Shrewsbury or Ludlow ? 24 hours without lo's....

We have Sat am to Sunday lunchtime to ourselves - lo's at gp's - Want to do a bit of Christmas shopping, wandering around. Lovely hotel / b&b - roaring fires, big baths and fluffy robes type place - mid November - Any suggestions / recomendations?

budget? lads of lovely places especially on the outskirts. ludlows got some fab restaurants, while shrewsbury's great for shopping, few drinks etc

Happy to have a special treat - so not too budget really (that's not too helpful is it, sorry)

Was hoping to stay centrally - have somewhere to drop bags off and head out again kind of thing. But happy to take recomendations if you think somewhere on the outskirts would be better.

the albright hussy is lovely but not cetral. however, really, really fab. so is the mytton and mermaid

if you want somewhere a bit more central then cromwells is nice but not as special te prince rupert is ok but overpriced imo`

shrewsbury is so gorgeous

we are going in a few weeks to do some christmas shopping, me , my mum and my 2 sisters go every year

i love it there. used to live there a few years back and would move back like a shot!

Shrewsbury is great for shopping. It has all the big shops and loads of lovely specialist shops too (go to Wyle Cop (a street btw) and The Parade). Some very nice restaurants too.

Ludlow is also nice but the shops are a bit tweed and pearls. It depends on what you're after.

I would second Lissie on hotel choices - she's spot on. There's also loads of nice smaller B&B both in and just outside Shrewsbury.

I know both well and would choose Ludlow for a romantic weekend (have done the same at both) Ludlow is quieter. Shrewsbury can be a bit rough and ready

ah, but the shopping/nightlife in ludlow isnt as good.

Especially as we will be on Wyle Cop and thats been mentioned!

Hope nobody has heard bad things about staying at The Lion.....? deep breath - hope its good. ( wanted something central so we can relax and be near everything.)

As some of you seem to know it well....any recomendations for dinner on a Saturday night?

I've never stayed or eaten there but it looks very nice and i've been in the foyer during a ghost tour of Shrewsbury so you may have an extra guest in your room .

Oh and you'll be opposite Viners wine shop .

DH says his work colleague swears by the restaurant in the Lion - he meets there every month for a meal with his long bow society (colleague not DH).

We have had a lovely meal at The Chambers Restaurant on Church Street.

Ditto Traitors Gate Brassiere.

La Lanterna is also a nice Italian but i'm not sure it's 'special' enough iyswim.

There's also a very nice old fashioned Tea Shop - Camillas.

(I should work for the Tourist Board )

Will have to keep an eye out for the long bow society!

agree, chambers is lovely. i used to work at the bellstone which is a nice buzzy bar. so is franks in frankwell, which is just across the river
