Due to go on holiday to Argyll and Bute (Kyles of Bute) next Friday for half term week and could do with help from anyone living in this area.

We have been to the area lots of times before and really love it but really struggle finding children's playgrounds for DD1 (age 4).

If you could pass on any ideas or any places to visit it would really be appreciated.

We like walking, child friendly cafes (also have DD2 (9 months) etc. and don't mind going up as far as Oban, or would even consider a day in Glasgow using ferry and train if weather is awful and there are some good child friendly places.

So looking forwards to our week away - hope any insider information will make our week even better!

Think you need Expat - she is the queen of the western isle's

Thanks geordieminx!

Expat - any ideas if you're in this area?

Please!

You may struggle with playgrounds because they're all outdoors and this Autumn has been wet and chilly here in the West. VERY different from England this year - snow will fall even in lower Perthshire tonight.

Bute is beautiful, but it is isolated and there is only one 'town', Rothesay, which has mostly pubs. That is why most take holiday there in summer in order to fish and enjoy the sand beaches.

The coach tour is great, though.

I think the Waverley Ferry is still running it's wroth a trip on that!

Benmore Botanical Gardens has an excellent cafe and is good for wee ones running about. It's popular with locals with young children as well as holiday makers and offers plenty of walks and guided tours.

Bring all waterproof gear - the wet weather will not let up this week at all and the gales have been strong yesterday and today.

The Oystercatcher in Otter Ferry is not a cafe as such, a pub and a restaurant, but family friendly, as well as The Bay Cottage Tea Room in Strachur, Creggans Inn outside Strachur is nice, too.

Most activities here are outdoors, people just go out in it, so if you come well-prepared for all weathers, you'll be okay.

Not too many cafes here as such, mostly pubs with restaurants.

It is a wild sort of beauty that does not suit some, as it is rugged and isolated in many spots and often cold and wet and windy, but we find it to our liking!

A car is a must, IMO.

The distances are not geographically that far, but there are only A roads and public transport is not available everywhere.

There is now, however, a direct coach from Dunoon to Glasgow. It is run by McGills here and well worth it because otherwise, it means you have to take a ferry, then a train and the two are only synced up in the mornign so you could find yourself waiting in poor weather for one or the other.

geordieminx · 20/10/2008 20:29

Told ya she knows EVERYTHING

expatinscotland · 20/10/2008 20:31

there's one playground in Dunoon and another, much smaller one in a village at Kilmum and a wee one in Kirn right on the shore so it will be windy because Loch Long is a sea loch.

but that's about it.

kids mostly just run round wild here rather than playground.

the kids here are back in school. their October week finished last week.

expatinscotland · 20/10/2008 20:34

Oh, Crown Cafe and Pub in Dunoon is child friendly and the Whistlefield outside Strachur is FABBY for wee ones as well - they sat us near crayons and toys the other night.

I love Loch Fyne Oyster shop for fresh seafood and goodies.

There is a restaurant attached, but it is entirely seafood on the menu unless you just want to eat chips.

nooonit · 21/10/2008 15:07

Thanks so much expat.

Tis the wet, wild and windiness (sp?) that we love!!!

Have car so can drive places fine. We are looking forward to walking -picking up DD2's new rucksack type carrier this week and have DD1's new walking boots and just need to get her waterproof bottoms.

Information on child friendly places to eat is great, in past years we have not known where to try in Dunoon so will give Crown Cafe and pub a try. Ones at Strachur and Otter ferry sound great too - we love the walk along the front along the 'otter' at low tide!

Think we went to the playground on the front at Dunoon last year but will try the one at Kirn. DD1 does like her quota of slides.

We love Loch Fyne Oyster place too - had fantastic meal 3 years ago there after DP and I had got engaged by the big tree at the woodland garden place nearby.

Very envious of you living in the area - my Godmother has a flat, so have been visiting since I was 3. DD1 went for the first time at 12 weeks. Didn't think there was much else playground wise but she will always quite happily rearrange the shore!

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply -will add more extra layers to my packing piles. Hoping the sea air will rid my two of nursery coughs!

no bother.

was impressed by the meal at Crown Pub, tbh.

GREAT cook on duty there. mmmmm.

Whistlefield is just nice atmosphere.

lots of trailheads off the single track road between it and Ardentinny but it has been unseasonably wet and extra boggy this year.

i slipped and got a rather nasty bruise on a footbridge last year because it had gone all slimy from the wet so do use caution.

we ate at La Cantina in Dunoon last year and it was tasty, but admittedly it was more of a parents night out so mostly it was about a bit of drink rather than the food.

there is a chippy owned by an Englishwoman in Arrochar and she does fish and chips English style - cod in breadcrumb rather than haddock in batter and mushy peas.

good whiskies can be had at the whisky shop in Inverary and also in the Edinburgh Woolen Mill there. also Argyll Vintners in Dunoon has an outstanding selection of whiskies.

the jail at Inverary is worth the tour! it's supposedly haunted but i think the eerie aura is mostly the result of terrible damp. there is a wee craft shop in the town as well that's great for nice, wee pressies for Xmas. i like the wee ceramic bothy houses and castles and they're only a fiver.

Otter Ferry is a beautiful beach, but it's best to get to it from the road off Strachur through Tignabruich and not the 'coastal route', which, although very lovely, is single track and not good at all even in summer. We got stuck in a bog there and had to be rescued by a local.

The Oystercatcher is owned by a friendly couple from Manchester.

there is a lavender farm between Tignabruich and Otter Ferry which is really cool. It's called Millcroft and they have a pet sheep which we got to stroke and many ducks as well (didn't get to stroke those).

have fun - hopefully i'll be either having a baby next week at Dunoon or have a newborn .

expatinscotland · 21/10/2008 15:31

oh, there are also loads of trailheads off the first car park you come to on the right in Arrochar as you head East.

it's how you get on The Cobbler but there are a number of good trails through there.

watch out this time of year on the roads for both sheep, which have right to roam, and grouse which are now everywhere and fly right in front of your car.

Bluebutterfly · 21/10/2008 15:38

If you cross from Dunoon to Gourock and don't mind a short drive (20 - 30 mins) just south of Largs on the road to Fairlie, Kelburn Castle has lots of activities for children...

here

It is a bit of a distance from Argyll though.

Also, you can take the ferry from Oban over to Tobermoray - if your dd has watched Balamory on tv she will love to see the place where the show comes from including the colourful houses (and it is nice to walk around as an adult, too)

nooonit · 21/10/2008 16:22

Wow, lots more info - it's Tignabruich, well Kames where we stay so lavender farm may be worth a visit (tempted by the sheep!)

DP will want whisky - shop in Dunoon sounds good - is it on the main street? Near the mug shop?

We've driven the road from Otter Ferry up Loch Fyne before, with some dramatic reversing!

Not tried Inveraray Jail before, not sure if DD1 would be freaked or not! Christmas presents sound good, but I will no doubt lose them before December.

We did the Cobbler years ago (pre children and associated weight and general unfitness!) but some of those trails sound good - at least no midges at this time of year hopefully.

Bluebutterfly - I'd wondered about a visit to Balamory but not sure if bank balance can take too many trips on CalMac! We'll be doing ferry over to Dunoon on the way up so Kelburn Castle sounds like a good stop off, thanks!

Expat - good luck with your baby - will send you good birthing vibes whilst whizzing around your fantastic area. I'm just looking forward to no teaching for a week, a large glass of red wine, a log fire and watching the boats bobbing out of the window!

inverary jail not great for a 4yr old, it freaked me out. Inverary nice wee town though

TheInvisibleSpookDidIt · 22/10/2008 01:35

If you're going up to oban theres a brilliant 'farm' type place (will goggle for the name).

It takes you for walks through the hills (knackers the wee ones) but they love it, loads of animals to see and a wee kiddies farm bit with bunnies and goats.

TheInvisibleSpookDidIt · 22/10/2008 01:39

Actually scrub that one. Just googled it and its closed. Was a great place.

What about the sea life center? here

Skramble · 22/10/2008 01:45

Kames area is gorgeous

Skramble · 22/10/2008 01:46

Kames hotel pub does great food.

nooonit · 22/10/2008 13:13

Thanks skramble and Invisible Spook.

Kames Hotel is within walking distance of where we stay but haven't eaten there for years. Is it relatively child friendly?

OP posts:
RaggedRobin · 22/10/2008 23:00

yes, come across to gourock and drive towards langbank - you'll find my favourite playpark -

finlaystone

it has wonderful wooden play areas dotted through the woods and it looks fabulous at this time of year with all the autumn colours.

Skramble · 22/10/2008 23:23

I would say the pub lounge is child freindly, its all very laid back, the actual restaurant is a bit sparse and echoey and lacking in atmosphere.

hellywobs · 17/11/2008 20:27

If you need somewhere childfriendly to stay on the Isle of Bute rather than on the mainland the Boat House is great. I stayed there in May. It's a guesthouse, not a hotel but the people who run it are lovely and it's well located in Rothesay. It's like a boutique hotel and I think we paid £75 a night for B&B for two adults and one 5 year old. You can cross the Kyles of Bute in 5 minutes or go from Wemyss Bay in 30 minutes. We did it one way and back the other.
