where do you want to go? I know Edinburgh a little. Expat used to live there and there are lots of others.

HereComeTheGhouls · 06/10/2008 19:09

am from Edinburgh

deanychip · 06/10/2008 19:12

ahahaha!!!
thank goodness,
Ok i need to get from waverley to a posh hotel called macdonald holyrood hotel. then to Edinburgh castle for a posh dinner and conference the end of this week.

aa tells me that from train station to the hotel is under a km, can you just tell me, is it a long walk with bags or will we be ok to just wander?
Is it very difficult to find or will i find it no probs?

am VVVV excited, ive never been to Scotland in my life!

If that hotel is in the old town - and from the name I'm guessing it is - then whilst the distance is quite short you will have to go uphill and/or up steps to get there so that might be hard work with v heavy bags. The castle will be all uphill on the way there - it's all uphill from wherever you are in Edinburgh but it's a lovely walk.

deanychip · 06/10/2008 19:20

hmm, im a fat bird who oesnt do walking specially not with bags!

wanna walk though as much as poss as i dont want to miss anything, want to drink it all in! cant wait am so excited.

Ok just googled it and with luggage I would get a taxi. It's near the dynamic earth isn't it? It will be a short ride but better than struggling over cobbles etc with dodgy suitcase wheels! Hope you enjoy your trip.

deanychip · 06/10/2008 19:27

cobbles oh how absolutely superb!
AA route planner says that the train station/castle and hotel are all near to each other.
I go Thursday afternoon, stay in posh hotel overnight after gala dinner in the castle, then conference on Friday actually at the castle.

Every one i have told (which is everyone!) tells me that it is absolutely gorgeous!

deanychip · 06/10/2008 19:28

conference is about poo but heyho, im not fussy!

The hotel is DOWNhill from the station..but I would say its probably at least a 20 minute walk there, if that helps

HereComeTheGhouls · 06/10/2008 19:31

maybe 15 if you go out of the back of the station

WouldYouCouldYouWithAGoat · 06/10/2008 19:32

get a taxi from the station to the hotel, you could walk but with bags it will be a faff. it is pretty easy to get from the hotel to tehcastle and it is a nice walk.

hotel has a nice pool!

mewerewolvesarehowling · 06/10/2008 19:32

deanychip that sounds fab. It is gorgeous and so easy to walk around. I would definitely get a taxi with your bags though.

rookiemater · 06/10/2008 19:33

I'm from Edinburgh. I'd get a taxi, its a fair old distance from the train station, and in slightly dodgy area, although the actual hotel area is fine.

If you haven't got your bags the next day then I would walk from the hotel to the castle as its up the Royal Mile and great way to soak in the atmosphere.

NorthernLurker · 06/10/2008 19:35

herecometheghouls - if you go out of the back will you avoid the scotsman steps bit as thats what i was thinking about being uphill?

meep · 06/10/2008 19:35

agree with HereComeTheGhouls - though if your bag is on wheels you'd manage it. The hotel is down near the Scottish Parliament - it's got a nice pool etc. My friend once bumped into some All Blacks in the sauna!

The castle is uphill from your hotel - quite a hike - likely to rain - I'd get a taxi!

Yes you can go out the back and along Market Street and Jeffrey Street, then cross the Royal Mile, go down St Mary's Street and turn left into Holyrood Road.. if you are looking at Google Maps!

deanychip · 06/10/2008 19:42

can i ask, we have about 1.5 hours to kill before we have to get our train home, where is nearby close to station that we can explore, or shop?

OP posts:
LadySweet · 06/10/2008 20:03

Harvey Nicks and Jenners are both close to train station for shopping If it's a nice day you can take a walk in Princes Street Gardens and (if you're feeling brave) go up the Scott Monument.

mewerewolvesarehowling · 07/10/2008 12:07

Waverley station?

Everything is nearby! It's bang in the middle. The gardens are just over the road, Princes St for tons of shopping, or you could walk back up on to the Royal Mile and mooch round a bit more.
