I'm not asking, not remotely interested really. But we're going on Saturday and partner is discussing routes

Thanks

google gives 4h 20 mins going across the top of the Peak District, via Rotherham & Doncaster (what??), Newark, Sleaford & Kings Lynn - sounds about right apart from the Doncaster blip

ChasingSquirrels · 20/08/2008 23:02

can you leave in the middle of the night

ProfYaffle · 20/08/2008 23:02

Wales is lovely at this time of year.

olympicsnotfederer · 20/08/2008 23:02

WendyWeber · 20/08/2008 23:03

onf, we did a similar but longer journey in 4, on a July Saturday.

olympicsnotfederer · 20/08/2008 23:03

tinker, pay no mind to us cackling traffic witches...

it will take as long as it takes

it is worth it when you get there, I promise

ChasingSquirrels · 20/08/2008 23:06

nah, it will be fine, everyone will be on the motorways, stop off for a nice lunch somewhere to break the run. have fun.

SqueakyPop · 20/08/2008 23:07

And it will be a beautiful drive

WendyWeber · 20/08/2008 23:10

The A17 doesn't go through Sleaford, it goes past.

To be fair, we went on the 3rd Saturday in July, & when we left on the 4th Saturday traffic was queueing to get into Norfolk on all the main roads, but even though it's the Bank Hol the last week in Aug is the second quietest in the summer hols.

ProfYaffle · 20/08/2008 23:12

Traffic was queueing to get in to Norfolk?

Gosh.

ChasingSquirrels · 20/08/2008 23:12

pmsl

WendyWeber · 20/08/2008 23:13

Yep, we were surprised too

Tinker · 20/08/2008 23:15

thats my good deed for the day, done

ChasingSquirrels · 20/08/2008 23:18

it can't have been as bad as the traffic queuing into cornwall at the start of may half-term (we were coming out having taken ds out of school for a week), it started at about 9.30am just outside Bodmin and didn't really stop until past Bristol. I have never been so glad not to have been going the other way.

ravenAK · 20/08/2008 23:22

We do Huddersfield to Bacton (10 miles on from Cromer) every few months. In a Ford crew van with 3 dc aged 4 & under!

It's 4 hours if we're lucky, usually nearer to 5, worst ever was 6. Really not that bad!

Can't remember precise route as dh in charge of driving, but good rule of thumb is motorways (quick) & B roads (pretty). Avoid yawnsome A17 as much as poss...

olympicsnotfederer · 20/08/2008 23:26

I think it is the A17 I still ahve nightmares about

ravenAK · 20/08/2008 23:29

It would be. Drive down's no problem, you get the motorway bits out the way & then just potter along after King's Lynn.

We have a rule on the way back that we travel after 7pm (so kids sleep) & stop off in Cromer for a bottle of wine for me...

Tinker · 21/08/2008 23:22

Oh, it's near Bacton that were going to!
