I just find it's easier to by when there and bring home, because when you leave a holiday let, you leave it bare-ish, and it just seems simpler to pack at that end rather than this end.

Of course, take what you need for the first night and breakfast the following day. Echo Oliveoil and recommendation re: sharp knife, and would add to that a good potato peeler because for some reason the ones I've seen in holiday lets are USELESS and make me inexplicably full of rage.

Had a friend who took a 1 litre bottle of veg oil home from a holiday, it spilt and her car was like a fish and chip shop. So would also recommend some empty bin bags for bringing back any dirty washing/wrapping things that might spill.

A couple of dishwasher tablets. A small quantity of washing powder (then if it seems that you will be doing lots of washing, which I tend to do because I hate the coming home to piles of washing), you can get more.

Thomcat, what we do on holiday is do an online shop before we go (and sometimes post it here so people can take the piss out of me!) and either get the cottage to unpack it and put it away (Niche retreats offer to do this) or arrange for it to be delivered just after we arrive.

That's food sorted then and apart from that I'd say:

dvds, esp family films
board games
ideas for days out and in
books
buckets, spades, wellies
